This is my first build. I had planned on buying a complete upper (minus BCG and CH) per the suggestions on this board.
Obviously with all the political panic going on, parts are hard to find. If I buy a stripped upper and barrel separately will this be something I can handle? I am fairly mechanically savvy but understand that there are more in depth issues that I am unfamiliar with, i.e. headspace and such. Edit: I have already built my lower from the guides found here on the board. |
| You should be able to do it. If you buy a barrel with matching bolt then you don't have to deal with headspace. You need to pick up an armorers tool and vice block at minimum to correctly assemble the upper. Remember to put some lube on the barrel nut threads. Make sure the gas block aligns correctly and seals good. The rest is simple mechanical assembly. If the gas block is too tight to go on the barrel or the receiver is too tight to go on the barrel extension, throw the barrel in the freezer for a while. If you can assemble a lower then you will probably find the upper to be easier. |

I'm in the same boat as this guy.
I've got all the parts coming for the lower but I'm SOL on the upper. So far I've spent 307$ on the complete lower. I think i'm doing good. 71$ Lower parts kit (shipped) 44$ 6 point stock and buffer tube combo deal. 175$ Code red firearms stripped receiver with FFL fees included. 17$ for a magpul MOE grip ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now for upper here was my plan. 10$ charging handle 150$ BCG 150$ Upper receiver 100$ barrel Gas block and crap.. I don't know how much for those. I'm planning on this being a sub 600$ build., while other morons are paying 1200+ for a similar rifle. |

For a complete rifle.... not with the present AR prices. |

I use Adam's Arms uppers (piston) on all my builds and they are flawless, easy to clean, no problems at all. I usually just get say the carbine one complete, because the piston block is pinned to the barrel, rather than locked down with screws that come with the conversion kit (just personal preference). I also get the cheaper ones, because I can just take the flash suppressor off, hand guards, etc... and put what I want on it. They do offer a lot of options from the link I put below if you go to complete uppers > adam's arms on their site, but I can usually find the other items on the upper cheaper elsewhere and I replace what I want.
I know the place I buy from is taking pre-order's on complete guns from Adam's arms that guarantee shipment by end of next month. http://www.westernsport.com/category-s/1922.htm So I would imagine they will have some complete uppers in soon too, and the customer service at westernsport's is A+ and normally ships out asap. |

I had intentions of building one sub 700 and it's not working out. It's actually getting worse everyday. Your list is already at $725. I'm curious where you get the $10 charging handle and $100 barrel? I appreciate the help! We all do. We're all in this together. |
