So I picked up a VLTOR MUR upper for a build and I go to the range this weekend. Well horror stories ensue over the forward assist blowing off the receiver! I bought this receiver because of VLTOR's propaganda about how rock solid it is and the strongest receiver ever. I want this build to be rock solid is this receiver a week point in my build? Should I just stash it in the safe and get a blemd BCM instead? On a side note I run my rifles hard! This will be my competition / training class rifle so I expect to put many thousands of round through it.

To clarify I have not used this receiver yet I'm just hearing stories of the forward assists blowing off and would like to know if anyone here has heard of this or seen this happen?

I don't get it.

Did your forward assist assembly come off or did people start telling you stories about it?

I've had two MURs now and have never had a problem with the forward assist assembly. On my current upper, I put a drop of sleeve retainer locktite on the pin which hold it up. The only reason I did this was because I had removed it when the receiver was cerakoted.

You need to keep in mind 90% of the stories people tell about this kind of shit is something they read once on the internet, and gets twisted into how it happens all the time.

That aside, I think a MUR on a rifle that you are using to take classes with and beat up is a waste. IMO, they are better suited toward precision type builds, not something that you are going to be thumping at the 7 yard line. The strength of the MUR isn't its selling point, its the increased rigity and tighter tolerances.

The FA housing is dovetailed into the receiver.
The ears of the dovetails are VERY substatial and the tolerances are tight.
The only way I see it "blowing off" would be if someone removed or forgot to install the roll pin holding the housing in place.
There's no stress on that roll pin, so shearing is unlikely.
I'm betting it would take a KB to "blow off" the FA.
And that would crack the receiver anyway.

So your saying it's ridgid, just not strong.

No, what I'm saying is that its selling point isn't strength. The stock forged 7 series aluminium receiver is plenty strong. The problem is that generic forged receives aren't generally that dimensionally sound. I really don't get where or how the OP got the idea that some uber strong receiver was needed, or that a stock one wasn't strong enough.

Rigid and strong aren't the same thing.

Sounds like the roll pin that holds the block that the forward assist is in was not in there or came out some how. Because I just took mine out to get ready to dip it and its grooved to slide back onto the upper receiver.

I ran my suppressed 10.5" carbine with VLTOR upper through a 2000 round law enforcement instructor course last week.  So the rifle has probably 8k through it now.  I have had no issues with the upper at all.  I think if you have an issue that damages the receiver, it would damage any receiver no matter the make.
