I've been whoring some pictures in the AX556 picture thread, but I figured I'd get a thread in here since it's a new build.

Ordered the lower back on May 1st and picked it up yesterday.  Lower is 95% complete as I want to put a Geissele in it.  I just don't know if I want an SD-C or an SD-3G so I'm holding out for now to see if I can find a dealer that has them on demo guns to test out firsthand.  The upper should have been done as well since I dropped off the parts last week, but my gunsmith has been getting some stuff changed around in his shop and had a booth to run at a show over the weekend.  He is guessing he'll have it ready by Thursday.  I would have done it myself, but I moved and have no work bench here yet.  It's also a 14.5" upper so he was gonna have to pin it for me anyway.  Only thing left for the upper is to decide whether or not I want a full size Scout light or a mini Scout.  Here is the parts list for the build.  Everything has been ordered...the Aimpoint was backordered so it just shipped last week and is supposed to be here tomorrow.  The handstops are backordered with no ETA, and the upper is out of my possession until it's done.  I'll update the thread as the last pieces come in and I get the upper back and get it all put together.

Lower:
-AXTS AX556
-BAD-CASS-ST 45*
-Daniel Defense LPK
-Magpul UBR
-LaRue Tactical APEG
-JP Enterprises Silent Captured Spring

Upper:
-BCM BFH 14.5" Mid Length
-BCM BCG
-AXTS/Rainier Arms Raptor Charging Handle
-Wilson Combat T.R.I.M. 13.8 Rail
-Wilson Combat Lo-profile Gas Block
-AAC 51T Blackout (pinned)
-KAC Micro Front and 200-600M Rear BUIS
-Aimpoint T1 2MOA on a LaRue Tactical LT660
-LaRue Tactical Handstops

Sweet looking stick, nice parts all together.

Nice build. IMO I would shave down the FSB to fit under the rail rather than use a set screw gas block. The  taper pins in the FSB are not going to budge.

I'm not too worried about it.  Not a fan of the way cut down gas blocks look and BCM dimples their barrels so the screws have a very secure "hole" to go into.  Not to mention if I really have issues I can mail it off to ADCO and have them pin it.  Hell I'm sure my gunsmith could probably do it too.

Edit: Just looked at the ADCO site and perhaps I can't.  If it really is an issue (which I'd hope not considering the thousands before me who have had no issues) then I'll just sacrifice the flash hider and break it down and re-do it.

Got the upper back from the gunsmith finally.  Still waiting on the handstops I ordered from LaRue and I need to make a decision on which light and Geissele I want, but I'm calling it done for now.

If you are in the market for a billet ambi lower, it actually isn't as bad once you get it built out.  Here are two similar builds and prices for comparison sake

Build 1:
AXTS AX556 $430
45* BAD-ASS - $65 ($20 discount when purchased with lower)
ALG Defense QMS Trigger Group - $45
Misc parts/springs/detents - $20

Total: $555

Build 2:
AR15.com “Ambi” lower - $275
Norgon ambi-catch - $80
DD LPK - $80
45* BAD-ASS - $85

Total: $520

But if you add a Magpul BAD ($30) lever so that it actually is ambi your total is $550

Hate to bump a month old thread, but I changed out a few things and finished off the build.  When I had posted last I was undecided on which trigger I wanted to use and which light I wanted to put on it.  I also came to the realization after shooting it a bit that the UBR is just too damn heavy for what I wanted.  With the UBR on it the gun weighed something like 9.3lbs loaded and I knew it could get lighter.  As it sits now with the addition of the light and changing the stocks it's at 8.8lbs loaded and feels much better.  Definitely think it helps the balance tremendously...I'm a little torn though because I love the UBR, I guess I'll just have to keep it in mind for a 16" build or something

Box of goodies from LaRue - Magpul CTR, LaRue Receiver extension kit (not using the spring or buffer, but wanted the kit to use the other parts for another build), Surefire M300A Mini Scout in a LaRue LT752 mount, and LaRue index clips...SR07 and Novekse QD end plate came in from a different vendor

Finally today the last piece came in...Geissele SD-3G

Feels good to finally have it all done.  The trigger is a little lighter than I thought it would be, but I tried both springs out the supply and still will use the regular one.  Honestly didn't feel to be that much difference between the regular and heavy springs and as long as my finger isn't on the trigger it won't go off.

Haha...very close.  The PredatAR chassis is the inspiration for the overall look of the gun.  If only LaRue would release their PST gas block I could have made it even more of a clone of the Costa.  The SCS I bought as an experiment...didn't really know what I'd think of it, but I'd heard a lot of great things so I wanted to give it a shot.  I took it out and shot about 500 rounds with it and had a few issues with short stroking on some steel, but after it got broken in a bit I haven't had any issues at all.  I get great ejection with steel or M855, no vibration, spring noise, and the gun feels much more smooth.  People say it makes it feel like a bolt gun and I can see what they mean.  To me honestly that typical feeling when you shoot the last round and the bolt locks back...that's close to how every round feels now.  It's kind of hard to explain because it's not really the exact same, but that's the easiest way I can describe it.  I thought it could be gimmicky, but I'm actually very pleased.  I'm sure there are more useful purposes (like 3-gun) than mine, but I'm very pleased with it and would buy it again if I were to do the build all over again.

You definitely should...it's a fantastic option if you want to go modular.  Only thing I wish is that they made some sort of slim covers like the LaRue GAPs as it can get quite hot after a few magazines.

but is it worth the 150 bucks doesn't give any greater advantage that a heavy buffer and milspec spring provide without reduced sound? otherwise its just another hydralic buffer to me besides I like my semi auto and like my bolt rifle you shouldn't make a super gun, that would defeat the purpose of buying guns

I didn't pay anywhere close to $150...I think it was $115 with a discount code from Midway.  It is very much different from a hydraulic buffer as there is no fluid inside.  The SCS is essentially a pistol guide rod/spring with weights on one end; there is no fluid, no leaking parts.  Benefits are debatable (besides the sound), but I feel that there is less felt recoil using the SCS than a traditional buffer and spring which could be attributed to a number of things.  Either way, when you factor in $20 for a chrome silicon spring and $35 for an H buffer, the extra $55 was worth the experiment.  I'm not really sure what you're trying to say with the last sentence (punctuation is your friend), but the SCS in no way takes away from it being a semi-auto nor does it make it a bolt gun.  It does not make it a "super gun" as it still functions exactly the same as any other AR and I will continue to buy more guns (including bolt guns, and semi-autos) that don't fit the same purpose as this rifle.  As with every modification to these, it's all a matter of personal preference.  I like the way the gun shoots with it in, just like some people like the way certain rails, charging handles, grips, stocks, optics, etc. look or feel.

I love your build.

It does look similar to the predatAR which means it looks awesome.

I especially like the rail.

Can you post a picture of your hand grasping the rail so we can see how slim the diameter is? (I'm referring to the thumb over grip or whatever grip method you use).

Best I could do by myself right now...I consider that more of an "angled" grip as if I grab it solidly around the rail I can touch the tips of my fingers quite easily.

That is exactly what I wanted, awesome!

The Noveske NSR uses that same barrel nut I believe. That's what I have on my rifle right now but this looks cooler.
