Hey guys this is my first AR build and I have read a lot of forums (especially from here). I have the list of what I used to build my AR and was looking for input on what my fellow gun enthusiasts have to say about my first build and if there is anything I should improve on...
- Aero Precision AR15 Stripped Lower Receiver - Daniel Defense AR15 Lower Parts Kit - Magpul AR15 MOE+Grip - Magpul Enhanced Trigger Guard - Magpul ACS AR15 Adaptable Carbine Strage Stock (Mil-Spec) - BCM Stock Hardware Mounting Kit (Mil-Spec) with H3 Buffer - Aero Precision AR15 Stripped Upper Receiver - Supply Arms Upper Receiver Kit - Spikes Tactical Engraved Dust Cover "Punisher/Flag" - BCM Bolt Carrier Group (MPI) - BCM Gun Fighter Charging Handle with MOD 3 Large - BCM Standard 16" M4 Barrel, Stripped - BCM Low Profile Gas Block (steel with set screws) 750 - Gas Tube - Mid Length - Magpul Front Site Gen 2 - Magpul Rear Site Gen 2 - Magpul Hand Guard, Mid Length - Magpul AFG2 I am pretty sure this is all the equipment I purchased and I feel pretty good about the quality from what I have read but I still would liuke to know what others think of my build. I will post pics when I complete the build. |
| Good parts list, Bill. The only suggestion I have is the handguard. If you barrel shows signs of high accuracy potential, as is often the case, you should consider upgrading to a free float handguard. After much trial and error, I ended up with Midwest Industries SS gen 2 model on both of my uppers. I too tried Magpul's angled foregrip, but found it just added bulk to the forearm with no real benefit. - CW |

Just my opinion....I don't think you can get te front sight mounted like this so it works. It really needs to mount to a rail, gas block or just be a fsb.
Also, unless I'm missing something, set screw gas blocks are an accident waiting to happen. A tapered pin FSB, even cut low profile would be best. Last, is the barrel a mid-gas length also? |
| The Magpul hand guard has rails that you attach their accessories or any accessoy too for that matter. The gas block I went with is because I heard a lot of good thi ga about BravoCompanyUSA and their products including their gas blocks which even though is attached using set screws their barrel which is whatcI went with is made for that specific gas block, so I liked that from my bolt carrier group all the way through my barrel assembly is made by the same manufacturer. |
| The MagPul hand guards won't be "fixed" to the barrel per se. There will be play (rotation) of anywhere from 1/8" to 1/2" in either direction and maintaining any type of zero with the sights will be almost impossible. You need to get a free float handguard, or a gas block with a rail on it to a fix your front sight to so the front sight doesn't move. Really shouldn't mount a magpul flip up front sight to a gas block though as it might melt. |

I didn't see them listed in the parts, so I'll mention the bbl nut/delta ring assembly and the handguard cap.
I also have to agree that mounting a sight to the MOE rail is not going to work well, and I wouldn't be crazy about all of the tension being applied to a gas block being held on by set screws, dimpled or not. Even if the gas block was pinned on, I don't know that the rail on top of the upper and the add-on rail on the handguard will be on the same plane. Looking at a rifle with an MOE guard, I think that might make your front sight too high in relation to your rear sight. |
| Yea when my hand guards came in I saw what everyone was talking about. I decided to change my hand guards from Magpul Moe to Samson Evolution 9" free float rail system. Also I had my barrel dimpled and pinned and that thing is not moving no where. The gun smith I used showed me the different ways I could have gone with my gas block and he recommended the low profile block as long as I dimpled and pinned the block he even gave me an older barrel and mounted a front sight base that has been tapered and asked me to try and move it and I was able to with just brute strength but after he pinned the same gas block I was barrel able to beat the gas block out of place. |
