Building my first AR and I have a 16" stainless barrel with no front sights.  Using a low profile gas block but I'm unsure what length of handguard to get.  I will be putting some flip up sights along with either a scope or red dot but will the 12" be long enough with flip up sights or do I need to be looking at something longer like a 15" length for better accuracy with the sight.

Personal preference. A longer rail will give you a longer sight radius. But it will also add weight.

The longer the sight radius the better. It is more a personal preference of the look, to me. A 15" might be right up to your muzzle device.

Personal preference of course,  I like at 13" on a 16" barrel:

A 12" rail will give you a longer sight radius than a mid-length with a standard front sight.  IMO that's more than enough, especially for back up sights.
