I have a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport that I am wanting to fix up.The rail that I am considering adding is the Troy 13.8" which will take it close to the muzzle break. I have heard different opinions about free floating the barrel and I wanted to know more good and bad points of doing so.  Also, what are some other modifications that are recommended?

No real down side other than cost.

In addition to the rail you will need a low profile gas block, a rail mounted front sight, action blocks and a torque wrench, and ideally barrel blocks to hold the barrel while you remove the flash hider.
