I am a new Ar-15 shooter I have a Smith and Wesson .223/.556 rifle with a Nikon scope and a bunch of stuff on it. I think it is a nice shooter. I also have a couple AK style guns and really like that round of ammo. With that being said I ask anyone that wants to help out this. Is the 7.62x39 upper using cheap ammo (tulammo) worth building? I built a lower and it is just waiting for me to make up my mind on what upper. I like the 300 blackout but ammo on that and .308 is high price. My friends and I do novice type events and we have a range built up using ar500 steel plates (8" round) we run through. The plates are 30 yards to 100 yards away anything closer is 10 yard are milk jugs or stuff. I am concerned with hitting targets not group sizes. So this is what I ask; Will the AR style work with cheap ammo like an ak-47? Will the rifle be reasonable accurate? Do you know what pitfalls I may run into? I really appreciate any feedback. |

Absolutely. There is a simple combination of parts that makes the x39 work in the AR platform. First make sure your barrel and upper receiver have the M4 ramps. You have to use ASC X39 mags or you will have feed issues. Add a Wolff XP hammer spring to your lower. The big choice is bolt and firing pin. AR15performance.com has the best x39 setup with the superbolt that uses a stock firing pin. There are other bolts out there that work fine but require an enhanced x39 firing pin. The ARP bolt is modified for greater strength, longevity, and firing pin protrusion. They are currently out of stock but are supposed to be back in stock sometime this month. I have a kies bolt and a sota bolt both with enhanced firing pins, uppers and barrels with M4 cuts, Wolff XP springs, and ASC mags. Both are fed exclusively WalMart Tula ammo and I have had no issues other than a bad buffer which is not related to the x39.
If you want a decent low cost x39 upper check out sota arms. They sell complete x39 uppers including bcg and ch for $400 shopped. I have one and it works great. I beat on it and it just keeps on truckin. My other x39 upper is a custom built Kies/LAR grizzly side charge setup and it works great. Good luck Bob |
