Hi, All -

I am changing a barrel on one of my uppers.  The new barrel will have a low profile gas block.  My question is, should the barrel be "dimpled" where the set screws turn in?  Can you purchase a barrel that is already dimpled?  Is this something that should be handled by a gunsmith, or is it DIY?

Some barrels have dimples, but it's easy to do yourself. Put it on and tighten the screws, shoot a hundred rounds through it to make sure it works. Then just remove one screw, drill until you have a little dimple, put some loctite on the screw, tighten it up. Repeat with the other screw(s). Hope this helps

Many barrels come dimpled.  Some manufacturers/dealers will give you the option (like Rainier).  If you get a barrel that isn't dimpled it is very easy to do yourself.  I've used THIS GAS BLOCK DIMPLING JIG with great results multiple times.  Just follow the instructions.  There is also a DECENT VIDEO DEMONSTRATION.   It is kind of pricey but worth it –– even if you do one barrel.

I'd use a little ROCKSETT on the set screws.

Great answers and suggestions, Guys.   Can you reccomend a good 18" barrel?

BCM 410SS barrels with rifle length gas sytem.  Rugged tack driver.  I prefer the coated barrel to the 'shiny' one.   I had mine coated by CLUB Custom Guns who preps the barrel by media blasting it first.  This gives the coat a nice satin finish.

I have a BCM 410SS 16" barrel.  Looking back I wish I would have gotten an 18".  I sent it off to springer precision to get ion bonded.  it seems like BCM never has the coated 410SS barrels in stock.

They have –– I've seen them in person.  I think others can do a better job coating them.  I have a couple of them and my 18" 410SS barrel did well for me in a Magpul SPR class.
