first off i would like to start saying im a noob when it comes to ar15 building, but i have been around guns my whole life. I purchased a YHM flash hider a few weeks back and just got my barrel in today. I bought a  16" DD midlength. i wanted to test fit the hider, just to see how it looks and when i did it did not thread all the way. I maybe got 2 full turns out of it before it stopped. Maybe im not doing it right. I have done my research and i thought they were the same thread pattern. Am i wrong about that? Or is there another problem all together?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Two full turns with a washer or without?
If without try it with the recommended washer.

Only two full turns? May be damaged or wrong thread pitch, I would NOT force it until
you figure out what specifically is wrong and get it fixed.

Cheapest of the two parts is the muzzle device, swap it out first if you can't visually inspect
the threads on both parts for damage.

Purchase a thread guage and be sure both are threaded the same first. Cost is only about 9 bucks.

If you good with a ruler in 1/32 scale you could get a good guess if they are the same.  Most places will have a different thread for say 9mm vs 5.56 this is to keep some fool from putting a 5.56 on a 9mm bore.

Bring your barrel to the local hardware store and go to the aisle with all the nuts and bolt bins. Look for a nut with 1/2 x 28 pitch and see if it fits properly.

i used the washer that came with the flasher hider. I did not even think about using my thread gauge, im hoping its just the hider that is threaded wrong. ill see how it goes tomorrow i guess. It would be a bummer if that barrel is threaded wrong.

I have never seen any hardware store have
nuts or bolts with a 1/2x28 threads.
Thread pitch for gun parts are not the norm

I would try Ace hardware. Most big bin stores won't have it but Ace has just about every size made.

I shop at the Ace in my town and one town over
and wish they had gun size thread pitch nuts and bolts but they dont.

Touche, I stand corrected. I guess they are "just outside" "just about every size made" If you ever need a 2/3x51/4 widget wrench look there though.

Not uncommon.....I have encountered a number of muzzle devices that needed to have a tap run in them to clear the threads....often a coating buildup.....didn't notice where you are....but if near Macon Ga....drop me a line ...be glad to help you out....

LOL.....nope...bit too far to drop by the shop...........but a local smith should have a 1/2 x 28 tap to clean the threads......parkerizing can cause a deposit build up in fine threads.......if you have a dremel take one of the wire brushes and run it over the threaded surface both ID and OD on the barrel and try again.....
