For a combination of my wife and I's first anniversary and Christmas(that's when we are hoping to have them ready for use), we are building two rifles with consecutive serial numbers.

She really wants a rifle that she can hunt with in VA, though she wants one that is lighter than my Remington R-25 in .308. For hunting in VA, it just has to be a larger caliber than .25. She has decided on 6.8 SPC. I know next to nothing about this caliber. Will she need special mags for it as well? I know she'll need a 6.8 SPC BCG and a specific barrel for it, what is the "ideal" barrel length for accuracy with 6.8? Most ranges that we have access to top out at 100 yards, and that would probably be close to the max range we'd be hunting at. Our only downside is that while we have a good amount of tools and will easily be able to build out our lowers, we will probably need to order a complete upper as we don't have access to a vise or any thing else that we could use to properly float the barrel.

Mine will be simple, I just want a fun plinker, mine will be in 5.56.

Both rifles will be based around two stripped lowers that we have currently have in hand from Sun Devil Manufacturing. The lowers are OD green cerakoted. She wants as many parts for hers that can be to be OD green to match. For mine, I'm planning on having the pistol grip be OD green and having a forward grip on mine also in OD and everything else in black. That should ensure that both our rifles look sufficiently different to avoid any ammo mixups.

To start, we'll build the lowers first. Quality is what we want. If we have to wait longer to save up, then we are happy to do so. But we also want bank for our bucks :)

For lower parts kits, I'm leaning towards going with Spikes Tactical, are they good quality? PSA also has kits, how do theirs compare? My local FFL said he likes Spikes and Stag Arms, how's a LPK from Stag compare? Will all parts kits work with any caliber upper she may use? I see so many conflicting reviews on just about every LPK, that it is frustrating trying to come to a good decision :)

For stocks, there is a gun show coming up, so we'll wander around and check out quite a few. Right now we're leaning towards Magpul ACS-L stocks. What would be a good weight for her recoil buffer with the "ideal" barrel length above?

Any pitfalls to watch out for? Anything else that I may be forgetting?

Most importantly, thank you for having the tacked thread with walk through instructions for building your own rifle! My wife can't wait for us to get more parts so she can start putting hers together.

Thanks all!

6.8 is a smoking round but I will admit I do not know what other parts you'll need specific to that caliber.
Depending on what she is hunting, have you considered 300 AAC blackout? Great small to medium-large game
round out to a couple hundred meters and is really sweet suppressed. Bonus, only part different in an AR
platform for the 300 blkt is the barrel, everything else is the same as 5.56.

She considered .300 blackout, but she'd prefer 6.8 only because her current favorite rifle is her Savage 111 bolt in .300 WSM. Though she told me she would be happy with either 6.8 or .300 blackout.

Most of what we would be hunting in VA would be whitetail deer.

On the LPK question......  My PSA lower kits are pretty close to the DD LPK I also have. Both work well, but the DD has a minutely smoother trigger pull......

Caliber?  I would go with the .300BLK if you reload. There are a lot of options available there. If you do not reload then it is a toss up.

Posting an update. Our lowers are now built.

We purchased two "Spikes Enhanced" LPK's at a gun show. My grip is a MOE+ in OD Green, her's is an Ergo grip in OD Green. For our stocks we both went with Magpul ACS-L "Mil-spec" Stocks, her's in OD Green, mine in Black. We purchased the buffer tubes/springs/etc from PSA.

A special thanks to PSA, when I ordered the stocks and stock parts kits online from them, I mistakenly had 2 LPKs in my cart when it turns out my wife had already purchased the LPKs at a local gun show. PSA was kind enough to exchange the two LPK's for a stack of PMAGS. Thanks PSA!!! :)
