I have used a couple of different makes.
RRA ambi- It will do the job, but the mounting option is not the greatest. One side has a narrow rod attached to it and it slides into the main body of the selector. Set screw on the main body locks rod in place. The one I have sticks out a little too far to my liking, but it will work. LMT/CMT ambi- Uses a better mounting option. The right side lever looks just like the other side and a screw with a tapered head is what holds it in place. This (IMO) is a more robust option compared to the RRA. I usually grind down the arm flat as i liked to sweep the second knuckle of my trigger finger to put it in safe. With it flat it is just smoother. BADASS ambi- Loved it so much I am slowly phasing all my rifles (except clones) to this style. Solid mounting like the LMT/CMT but with a TONS of options for each side to configure. I usually run the standard safety arm on the left side and the long flat one on the right side. Noveske STS ambi- My brother has one on his rifle and it's not bad at all. Has a shorter throw than a standard safety. Install is said to be slightly more involved than other safeties, and my brother said it was, but not impossible and it came together quickly. My only dislike is there is no option for a long flat right side. Troy ambi- Never used one, but install does seem to be pretty simple. Limited arms options so i never looked into picking one up. |
| I haven't tried the BAD ASS yet. I have used the JP Rifle, Troy and generic (DPMS?) units, and all of them work fine. That said, screws in mission critical assemblies (e.g. fire control parts) give me pause. That's why I always de-grease the screws and screw holes on ambi selectors and apply Loctite. That's also why I tried the Troy unit. The Troy levers slide into a dovetail on the main shaft and are held in place by spring loaded detent pins, rather than screws. Frankly, they are kind of a pain to install and remove. I can't imagine them going anywhere accidentally short of a major blow to the lever itself parallel to the dovetail, which seems highly unlikely. |
| I think a lot of these are made by the same folks or at least look exactly the same. I picked up a CMMG one from CDNN a while back and like it well enough that I want to put one on all my non-retro ARs now. The cheapest I have found them is Rock Rivers site for $25 and free shipping. |
