If the shims don't work the earth is spinning off its axis.

Don't you need to get within 20° of time, finger tight, then go wrench tight to time ?
There must be a shim combination that will get you there.

Do you get a full shim kit as you would when the kit is bought separately ?

I would just use a crush washer. You shouldn't have any problems timing the brake or it coming loose.

I had those exact install instructions, it was less than 30 but for some reason the shims started buckling.

We just installed the 556 on my friends AR today and the #2 put it right where it needed to be.

When you put it on hand tight, how far off is the logo (in approximate degrees)?

logo is on the bottom of the barrel in the 6 o'clock position.

eta: sorry without the shims it is at 6 o'clock, with four of the shims it is about 25° off from being 12 o'clock

So the wrench flats need to be at 12:00 and 6:00
If you can live with the logo at 6:00, perhaps one #2 would have dialed you in ?

I can see how a stack of #2's would squirt around a bit.

This is my A2 flash hider on a Noveske barrel. Notice that it needs a 90 degree turn to be indexed properly:

I used a crush washer and I was able to index it perfectly. Just clamp the barrel, give it a twist until it indexes and all is good. I've heard people have been able to do a 360 degree turn using a crush washer.
