I know chrome lining reduces barrel wear and your barrel will last longer. But how does it effect accuracy? I've heard lots of stuff like can spread your groupings out by an additional 1/2 in or more at 100 yards. So if some would please help me out here, I would deeply appreciate it. I'm planning my second build and want to go 6.5 Grendel. My first build was a 16" SS Wilson Match heavy barrel that is giving GREAT accuracy with Hornday  75 gr. #9760EL & Privi 75 gr. Match. I would like to Thank Everyone Here for your help with it, because of reading these threads I was able to avoid a lot of mistakes I would have made on my own. And I want to build my Grendel with 2 uppers, 1 16-18 in. & one 24-28 in. And I'm trying to decide on which type of barrel to use on the 16-18 in. upper. And I have to do it as cheaply as possible, because of the cost of the second longer upper. I have been looking at Model 1 Sales & JT Distributing Grendel kits as a starting point. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

87gn convinced me that chrome lined barrels were just as accurate as unlined barrels of late.

His info was good enough for me.

Regardless of what is said above, my experience with MANY barrels, chrome or otherwise, is that a chrome lined barrel never has equivalent accuracy of a plain steel bore or stainless barrel.  Yes they are more durable, hold up to sustained fire rates better, resist throat erosion better,  resist corrosion better, but sorry not as accurate.

As a general rule, I have to agree with the above quote. The process of chroming has improved but is not perfect. A chrome lined barrel has to be cut oversize to allow room for the chrome. Then the thickness of the chrome brings the bore back into spec. The problem is maintaining the thickness over the entire length of the barrel. Yes there are some very accurate chrome lined barrels. The question is, will you get one.

Get a stainless barrel for your Grendel.
Here you can get a genuine Grendel chamber and a Grendel bolt...
AA barrels

Precision barrels use cut rifling or button rifling with no plating. Clean edges on the lands are important for bullet engraving which translates to a higher degree of accuracy potential.
Grendel is a precision cartridge.

Chrome lining works well for high volume, high rate of fire fighting guns.

It seems there are some very good chrome lined barrels out there now.
However I think I would stick with one of the proven SS barrels at this point in time.

your intended use is really going to make the decision for you.

If I were you I may go with ss match for the longer precision barrel and chrome for the shorter blasting barrel.

Again use will dictate your choice. Are you going to be dumping lots of rounds through this or still a precision rig just shorter?

First, Thank You guys for your advice. To answer a few questions my shorter barreled upper I'm planning is for hunting & target shooting. I don't plan on rapid firing 30rd mags with it and just blasting way. More in tune with precision shooting. When I built my LaRue Stealth Sniper clone, or a reasonable try. I was very impressed by the Wilson SS barrel. I think I'm getting under a inch but haven't really done any serious testing ( next time ) it was my first time out with it. The pics aren't bad but I shot more than 5 or 10 shot groups I was trying to sight in my scope. The Longer barreled upper is for target & maybe long range hunting. I live in the desert so most hunting is long range. I'm checking out the link to AA, and was wondering who makes their 16-& 18 in. barrels, is it ER Shaw? And if they are ER Shaw barrels aren't Model1 Sales barrels the same now since AA released the patten ?

I believe that you are correct, except think blanks, not finished barrels.
Many barrel vendors are using E.R Shaw for their value lines and start with blanks.
They prep the blanks with their own reamers, check straightness, lap the bores, crown, thread, install BE, gas ports, polish chambers all with varying degrees of completion and skill.

And if they are ER Shaw barrels aren't Model1 Sales barrels the same now since AA released the patten ?

No.
They use a similar chamber that they call "6.5 Sporter"

Also keep track of your bolts/barrels.

I believe AA uses a "Grendel Bolt" and M1S is using standard 7.62x39 bolts and they don't interchange.

Thanks, I thought Model 1 was using the true 6.5 Grendel chambering, and since both companies are using ER Shaw barrels their 18 in SPR kit with SS fluted barrel looked pretty good for around $700. But now, not so much. Thanks again.
