it looks like your upper parts kit comes with a charging handle...
if your getting magpul handguards you will be needing barrel nut delta ring assembly and end cap.
You may want to find a free float with barrel nut included that you like.
also im seeing buffer tube but not buffer and buffer spring get a buffer kit will have all 3 + castle nut and end plate
you can get a flash hider those are all pretty generic if you get a comp or brake they serve some different purposes in reducing muzzle jump or recoil etc...

Also, when you say stripped upper, do you mean no barrel, or do you mean no FA, no ejection port cover, etc.?

Make sure your gas tube comes with a roll pin, also.

Yeah, the buffer comes as a kit if I remember right.

I didn't know I needed extra stuff for the magpul guard. I thought about free float rails, but they are so damn spendy. Is there really much difference between the $400 and $100 versions?

The tube has the pin.

Stripped upper refers to a completely gutted upper in my case.

The upk I'm looking at is the forward assist and dust cover only.

the biggest difference between a $100 and a $400 rail is probably weight and ergonomics. UTG is at the low end of the price range and most I've seen that have one are happy. A step up is YHM I have a YHM lightweight rifle length it is pretty heavy and feels like a cheese grater but a solid rail and very comfy with some index clips on it, My preference would be towards the troy, samson or MI modular rail systems, they are very light and comfy and you can attach rails for your accessories wherever you wish.

A free float system will eliminate shifts in poi due to barrel flex from a sling or bipod.

I took a look at the modular rail systems. Looks like they are a bit more advanced than I need. I do like the look of the rra half quad though... Kind of middle ground and still free float. $155 isn't TOO bad....

The rra site says "some gun smithing required to instal." do you know if that would be the average things with any rail or are they talking turn down the barrel or something?

From my experience, and I'm kinda getting a vibe from your post, I would recommend that you just stick with the MagPul
hand guards and get the extra parts needed as they are not expensive, easy to install and later on if you want to
spend $$$ you can step up to the free float rail systems. The hand guard kits can be had for $15-25 that include the weld-spring,
C-slip, barrel nut delta ring, you can spend a couple dollars more buying the individual parts if you wanted to shop around.
I would also recommend that you buy whatever it is you're going to buy at the same time as other parts to save on shipping.
Shipping is where some vendors really put the screw to us.
