I am planning on putting a Troy/Vtac Alpha rail on my DD midlength 16" (it has standard FSB, which I plan on grinding down).
What is the minimum length of rail I need to cover the cut down FSB? |

Until someone comes along with an actual measurement, from:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/mediapages/ArticleDetail.aspx?mediaid=424 "Mid-length gas tubes are approximately 9.5" and require a handguard around 8.5"-9" in length." Take these numbers and add the total length of the FSB base, minus the gas hole offset for a fairly exact number. If this isn't answered by the time I get home, I will measure my middy for you. |

My 11" rail doesn't cover my chopped FSB (mid-length) entirely. There is about 1/5" that is exposed. However, if you have a low profile gas block, it should be shorter and an 11" rail should cover it.
I'm now selling that 11" rail because I didn't measure ahead of time
ETA: I would have kept it if my chop job wasn't ugly as shit. If you have a nicely finished FSB, the 11" rail actually looks pretty cool with a partial gas block peeking out. |
| Troy 11" would be the minimum. I have a BCM midlength with the front sight dremeled down and an 11" Troy Extreme installed. It is exactly long enough and I love it. If you want to go with the 11" (for minimum weight) or go for a 13" for more coverage and more real estate for a more extended support hand grip, if that's your cup of tea. Oh, and also google "Project Featherweight" for a nice example. |

I dont have a good pic, but a 12" rail covers up a low pro gas block EASILY on a midlength.
I would think you'd be safe with an 11" so either 11 or 12 whichever rail you like comes in whichever size. For example a DD Lite rail doesn't come in 11" so I went with a 12". |
