Hey all,
I plan on chopping the FSB on my upper, and I have two questions. 1. What does the hive recommend coating the new exposed metal with after cutting? 2. How does one remove the handguard end cap? I have yet to see it in any of the tutorials and I have seen some leave it on. If it helps I am using the Rainier Evo 12" for a handguard. |

1. Barbeque grill paint, or auto header paint.
2. Are you keeping the sling swivel? If not, after it is drilled and removed, lightly dremel the handguard cap as best you can withjout buggering up the sight badse of barrel. Then clamp opposite sides of cut you made in the cap with vise grips and work back and forth till it tears off. . |

Just did this one this past weekend. Turned out just fine. http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/Gas_Block1.jpg Did you just rip off the cap? I asked because I opened the box on my new upper and realized that I have no idea how it is attached. I figured a little notch cut in the bottom of it and grabbing it with some vise grips and use a can of man to get it off as suggested. I didn't know if there was a little spot weld on it or something that would lead to difficulty in that regard. Also that looks like awesome work. And it looks like you masked off the barrel around it. Solid paint job. I also just discovered a can of black barbeque paint that should do the trick. I hope mine turns out as nice as yours. |

I have a couple questions to add to this, as I also have a rainier 12" that I will be installing as soon as my PSA upper arrives (seems like I ordered it forever ago).
1. Is it better to remove the FSB and do the modification work, or is it simpler just to leave it attached to the barrel? 2. Since this rail uses the stock nut, do I just cut off the delta ring? thanks! |

I am leaving mine on the barrel as it is a pinned 14.5 upper and I don't want to mess with the taper pins and their integrity of holding the FSB to the barrel. I assume it's easier to chop when it's removed but I am just taking extra precaution and doing it slow when cutting. and to answer your other question, according to a tutorial I saw you can just cut the delta ring, staying in between the teeth on the barrel nut making two cuts roughly 180 from one another. Then taking a screwdriver and prying it apart. Then cutting the springs (if the initial cut was insufficient) and snap ring and pulling those out with pliers. That is my plan anyways. I now have to patiently wait for my BCG to come in and my buddy's stuff to get in from Palmetto so we can have a building party. |

that's a nice job with the grinder.. i don' t have so much patience or skill and mine looked like it's been 'chopped'.. LOL

I punched out the pins and worked on it removed from the barrel. Its much easier that way. The original handguard cap can be simply slid off the barrel. Refinished this one with Rustoleum High temp paint and baked it at 300 degrees for 30 mimutes. It will be just fine hiding under a midlength handguard, |
| It will be a lot easier to work on it if removed from the barrel. If you have a 14.5", then you should still remove the pins (all 3) in order to slide it down the barrel so that the gas tube can be removed. This will give you room to cut the end cap and delta ring off. |

When I lo pro one, I always remove it from the barrel. Easier to work with and when you slip off with a dremel or grinder you wont hit your barrel. Be careful using a vise on the ring parts of the FSB as you can ever so slightly crush the circle and make it not fit as well. BBQ grill spray paint to finish and whammy.
If you want to use a set screw to re-instal, there is a hole on the bottom of the FSB rear ring that is exactly in line with the gas port in the barrel & inside of FSB. This was made in the original manufacture process. If your barrel is not already dimpled for the set screw you can use this hole to mark the location of the dimple. Use a drill press to dimple the barrel, thread tap the hole in the bottom of FSB, install your set screw, and go shoot. I dont recall off hand what size thread tap but its very common, as are the set screws from ACE hardware. |
