I am getting the parts together to build my son an AR like"Daddy carried in the 60's". A good friend gave me a stripped upper with the old triangle shaped hand guard. Needless to say I am having a hell of a time finds parts at the normal places. EVERY place I go shows out of stock.
I am looking for a bolt and carrier, charging handle for the stripped upper. Any place that you guys know of that might have any in stock that won't break the bank ? My son is going to help with the costs of parts and I'll put it together for him.
As the two of us get the funds I'll look for the lower soon.
Oh, one other question. I did see one complete carrier and bolt for a ".223 Commercial receiver". Whats the difference ? I thought only the chamber was different between the 5.56 and .223 ?
Thanks.

Post pics of receiver.  Also check out the Retro forum for help with the period and what parts you need.  I built a M16A1 for my dad.  I found the parts and put them together.  The used section in the EE usually has some retro uppers, barrels, and complete uppers.

He wanted new so I picked up a Delton lightweight 20" barrel to build his.

bolt carrier groups will work in any upper.  Difference will be Semi-auto or Full-auto carrier.  Then you can start looking at the various options out there.  Spike's and Palmetto both make damn nice BCGs for around $110.  Not sure if Spikes has theirs without the spider logo or not, but the PSA cannons is pretty subtle.

OK, here is what I have so far. Want to complete the upper and then move on. You can see what is missing. I kow the flash hider is wrong, I have a friend who has the open "brush catcher" I can get.
Hope these pics are OK, just popped them and posted.

Looks like a Colt 604.  I'd leave the flash hider on there as long as there is no flat portion on the under side of it (A1 has a slot, A2 has the solid section).  I believe late 60s had the A1 and earlier 60s had the duck bill flash hider.

Check the Retro section for help with a correct grey color charging handle.  They will probably be able to point you in the right direction for a slick side bolt carrier as well.

Nodak will have the correct lower and in the correct color as well.

Thanks guys. Midway had a .223 carrier and bolt for $136.00 delivered. Since this is NOT going to be any thing but a "look-a-like" shooter for my son that should be fine. Thanks balloo93, I'll check out Nodak for the lower.

One more thing. If it is a Colt what would the twist rate be ? I use to know how to check it. I marked the cleaning rod with white paint at one foot  and a mark on top in the middle. pulled the rod up until the second mark came up and counted the turns. LOL, it only turned one complete revolution. Did the same for my 16" barrel that is a 1 in 9 twist. Don't know if I proved an damn thing.
How do I really check ?

One more thing, I did find some markings about 3" from the muzzle on the bottom of the barrel "C  MP C" any idea what that is for ?

Possibly civilian marksmanship program colt? When I see cmp that is what comes to mind, I'm sure someone will know what it means though. That is just a guess.

".223 Commercial Receiver" sounds scary.
Avoid whatever site is using that terminolgy.

If you need to stay vintage, try posting over on the Retro sub-forum.
If you can use common parts, you just have to search around.
People are hoarding.....typical election year crap.

That means is a Colt, Magnetic Particle tested, and Chrome lined barrel.

Fulton Armory has a lot of the parts, probably all of the parts, you need to make that complete.
