Ive tried to read up on it as much as possible but cant deceide if I should try (dont know how) to check my head spacing before I go out and shoot my new gun. I bought all quailty parts so i really dont think this is going to be an issue @ all.

What happens when I check it and it isnt in spec? Trash the whole project? I would contact the barrel/ bolt manufactures How many of you guys actually check head spacing using high quality parts? I will probably have a local gun smith check, it takes all of a minute and i dont feel like buying the gauges. Whats the worst that could happen if its not in spec? Lose half of my face? Worst? Big kaboom Your face would probably be ok, depending on where you hand is might get a little shrapnel (this is the very worst though)
Chances are it will be fine |

Surely there's a competent Black Rifle smith in your vicinity. Bring (minimum) bolt and barrel to him and have him check it. 99 44/100's of the time, with quality parts, this system will check out fine. |

thanks guys. Ill get it checked out just to be on the safe side. I like my hands the way they are Good choice, its always better to check. Mose gauges require the removal of the extractor and ejector. Some however can be used with the ejector in place… Just bring the entire upper they will let you know. |

thanks guys. Ill get it checked out just to be on the safe side. IIf I buy the guages myself should I get both the .223 and 5.56 if I plan on shooting both? If you have a 5.56 chamber it will safely fire .223 ammo. For headspace measuring purposes you need to understand the dimensions marked on the various headspace gauges. You also need to know how to properly perform the check. Check your PM's |

Get a set of SAAMI 223 REM gages.
I want my new barrels and bolts to pass the SAAMI NoGo Gage. According to SAAMI a SAAMI spec Field Gage is the maximum safe headspace to fire a SAAMI spec cartridge, 223 REM in this case. The Colt or the mil Field Gage are the max safe headspace for 5.56mm. |

Daniel Defense Flat top Upper Daniel Defense CHF, Chrome lined 16" barrel BCM AUTO BCG Daniel Defense Lite rail Head space pertains to the bolt and the barrel extension. Many vendors, like Rainier Arms for instance, checks head space for you if you buy the barrel and bolt from them. Some vendors will also check head space for you if you send your bolt, barrel or both to them. A qualified gun smith should be able to check your head space for you. You can check you own head space if you buy, borrow or rent the gauges. IF your head space if not within spec then you can swap out the barrel, barrel extension or the bolt until you have a compatible match. Which ever combination works best for you. |

Keep in mind that the majority on this forum in the AR section are using 5.56 (or Wylde) chambered weapons. The few that have .223 chambered AR's had better keep 5.56 ammo away from them. This is because of the shorter freebore in the .223 chamber can cause a pressure spike if 5.56 ammo is fired in it. Also, it is best to refer to the actual dimensions printed on the gauges. There are way too many gauges in this caliber to accurately keep track of them by their worded description. New Rifle Headspace: 1.4646" to 1.4706" SAMMI headspace gauges to use: 1.465" and 1.470" Unsafe Rifle Headspace: 1.4736" Use the Colt M16/AR15 Field Gauge: 1.4736" or, The US military gauge: 1.4730” Note: The Forster/SAAMI "No-Go" gauge measures 1.467" This is in the middle of the "New Rifle Chamber" range. |
