It is used to "Tune" the extractor. The best thing you can do is throw it away, but that is just my opinion.

I wouldn't throw it away, just stash it your range bag or spare parts kit.

OP, the O-ring slides around the extractor spring. It increases the extractor spring tension. It was a field modification done as part of the SOPMOD program (IIRC) to mitigate failures to extract under the harsh recoil of the carbine gas system.

the BCM bolts already come with a heavy duty/extra tension extractor spring. If you install it now, you'll most likely have too much extractor tension and that could cause issues and unnecessary wear on the bolt/extractor.

I recommend keeping it with you, because sometime between a few thousand rounds and total bolt failure, the extractor spring could weaken over time and cause issues. Adding the O-ring as a workaround to improve tension would save you a wasted trip to the range and keep your gun functioning until you can purchase a new extractor spring.

Thanks for the reply's. I'm going to stash it back in the spare parts for now. I installed the bolt and a empty casing and it extracted it with no problem. It's mating up with a 20 in reclaimed goverment barrel. Thanks again for the quick answers...

I was being harsh earlier, I apologize it's just that this was a cheap solution to the extractor spring wearing out. Put it away as stated in case you do need it to get you out of a jam at the range, or pick up some extra extractor springs and call it a day.
