can anyone explain what the pros and cons are of haveing a front sight base on your upper? I'm all new to this and have been doing a lot of reading but just cant seem to understand why you would want or not want it.

If I got the Front sight base would I use a rear sight like the Magpul MBUS sight? Would you recommend anything else? There are just so many options I want to make sure that I do things correctly

I am looking at these 2 uppers. I would like to put a red dot on my build. I have en route a spikes stripped lower and PSA LPK.

Also can someone explain the difference between M4, Mid, Mid Light and Light

with Front Sight Base:

without Front Sight Base

Thanks!

It's a like or no like part.
I personally like the iconic A-frame FSB.
There is a common misconception that they interfere with optics.
They "disappear" and go out of focus (at 3x) as you dial up the power.
There is a standard height and the "F" height. F height is .040" taller and meant to work with the A3-type flat top.
Standard is for the A1/A2 with the integral carry handle.

You could use the Magpul, USGI carry handle, any number of flip ups or fixed rear sights.
I'm not a MBUS fan (plastic)...I like the Troy. Weapon Revolution did a nice comparison of the popular irons.

Also can someone explain the difference between M4, Mid, Mid Light and Light

M4 = The current US military carbine configuration. It describes the entire weapon system.
Mid = Refers to a gas system length. It's a civilian configuration that is between carbine and rifle and usually sports a 9" handguard.
Mid light = Mid gas system with a thin contour barrel
Light = A thin barrel contour. Sometimes called "pencil"

Of those two I would go for the first one.
I don't like carbine gas on a 16" barrel.

It's a personal preference thing.

Direct-Drive, thank you. Makes perfect sense now

My personal experience is that the front sight disappears with magnification.  To me a red-dot is an optic and I doubt it disappears on a red dot.

I don't use a RD sight but I believe that most of these are 1x (no magnification) so that it is a more natural sight picture when the user has both eyes open.
I know that some shooters like irons in combination with the RD in the sight picture.
This effect is called co-witness.
