I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my barrel. Actually, not that anxious because YHM said it might be two more weeks for the barrel to be ready. I am installing a YHM 1:9 20" fluted barrel (model YHM-79-TF). I have a YHM full float handguard (model YHM-5005). I  have two questions about the barrel nut installation.

1) Does anyone have a preference on what type of lube to use on the threads? Is CLP OK or should I use something like Mobile One, or does it make a difference?

2) What do most people use to tighten the barrel nut? Can I use a strap wrench or should I get the YHM barrel nut wrench?

I guess technically that was four questions, but whose counting.

Anyway, thanks for your comments.

For the threads, use a good grease. Cheap and easy route would be axle/wheel bearing moly grease (like coastal uniplex, black/dark grey. not the yellow stuff)

I would not even try it with a strap wrench. The yhm wrench is nice because it has a spanner for the jam nut on one end. But any armorers wrench will work.

If this is your first time assembling an upper, I'd highly recommend reading the upper building instructions right here in the build it yourself forum

This question comes up about once a week.

For your YHM free float handguard you will most likely have to deal with a proprietary barrel nut that receives the YHM float tube.
You'll have to check with them and what kind of wrench it takes.

I've installed several YHM FF tubes, including the 5005 lite-weight(the one you ordered), solid and diamond. The barrel nut threads are proprietary yhm, but the wrench pattern is standard pin type. The only wrench I had a problem with on a YHM tube was a standard USMC one I got from a buddy.

google searched YHM barrel nut to show you a picture of one, and found this thread covering the same topic

My wrench looks just like this one in the pictures, got it at a yard sale for around $10 It's worked great.

Use a moly grease that is graphite free,  It will usually be a grey or white color.  As for tightening down the barrel nut, I have always gone by a torque spec of at least 30 ft-lbs but no more than 80 ft-lbs.  I highly recommend to not use a darn strap wrench.  Get the proper tools or have someone else assemble the upper!

That would mean a torque wrench and a barrel nut wrench.

Hope this helps.

I have the wrench for the barrel nut, and a torque wrench. I am not worried about that I am specifically talking about the jam nut. I guess I'll just get the jam nut wrench from YHM. Thanks

I guess that since I have over a grand in the rifle with no optics I might as well not skimp on $20 or so.

I put the upper in my vice block, put painters tape in the groves for the spanner....and used a hillbilly spanner wrench (i.e.  a dead blow mallet and a big ass flat screw driver it worked great, still tight several hundred rounds later)
But ya....I'd go for the spanner if I were you.

I re-read my original post and realized I wrote barrel nut when I should have written jam nut. I would never try to use a strap wrench on the barrel nut.

If you are at the point of installing the forearm, a strap wrench works well.  I would use the same grease on the forearm as well. You could get a away without buying their wrench, just a get a proper sized flat head screwdriver and a strap wrench.  I have installed a YHM free float tube this way before.  It will save you a few bucks, just take your time so you don't mess up the jam nut.
