I've never assembled my own upper.  I've seen plenty if vids, and the process itself doesn't seem that hard.  But I also notice everyone uses a vice hooked to a solid workbench.

Anyone have any tips or tricks for those who don't have a vice/workbench?  (Ah, apartment life)  Am I screwed?

(I guess I could always mount a vice to my balcony railing on my porch.)

There is a thread that was started recently where someone asked the same question. I tried to find it, but no luck.

Anyways ... someone said you can attach a vice to a piece of plywood and do the work just about anywhere. On the floor, on the kitchen table, counter top, etc...

One guy in that thread attached his vice to a piece of steel which slid into the hitch on his pickup truck.

When I was living in an apartment, I had my reloading equipment setup on a black and decker workmate.  It's solid and folds up to fit into a closet.  That would give you a small but sturdy workbench that you can attach the vice to.

Thanks for the info, fellas.

So I realized that under a mega-ton of my girlfriend's clothes...............we have a very heavy, old dresser in our walk-in closet and it's filled with random stuff we don't really use.  I think I'm going to pick up a vice and mount it up!  It's a tad shorter than I'd like for a workbench, but I won't be using too often to care, I doubt.

It's surely heavy enough to deal with whatever torquing will be involved in assembling an upper, and it's old, so the wood is fairly solid.  I think it will work.
