Looking to build a upper on my first build. Did the lower already. Looking to build a 16 or 18 in carbine. just wondering what parts do I need. I know must of the parts i need. just wondering on the small nickle and dime ya parts. Heres what I know..or what i think i know i need..

Spikes stripped upper with forward asst, ej door spring and pin from AIM currently (sold out)

Spikes m16 bolt carrier group  OR Bravo comp BCG auto for 30 bucks more.. not sure which is better?? Also does auto on the bolt decription MEAN fully auto?? always wondered.+

Spikes melonite Mid length gas tube from AIM

BCM gunfighter charging handle in medium size

here's where I'm getting confused..Im not sure really what else I need besides a barrel ,gas block and guard. As for barrel Im looking at a 16inch mid length one. Do i need a extension with that or do the come with that?

What else do i need to complete the upper build?

I'm thinking barrel nut..

low profile gas block if i use a scope.

Delta ring. tool required for that?

free floating hand guard. square is cool!!  9 inch??

Any insight with some direction would help

Thanks in advance!!

First a little reading in the TM will tell you what parts and tools you need for a standard build.
A free float tube will have its own requirements that vary between manufacturers.
If you are talking about the barrel extension for your purposes it comes with the barrel and is a part of the barrel assembly.
Low profile gas blocks are used under FF tubes.
Front sight and gas block setup will be partially determined by your choice of handguard be it standard or free float.

A muzzle device and crush washer would be in order here.

OK a full auto BCG is cut a little differently to work with a auto trigger group... so no that won't make it into a full auto.  Finding a auto sear that was registered before 1986 costs thousands of dollars..
the auto BCG will work fine in a semi-auto rifle so no worries.
Don't confuse Carbine and Mid-length. (ok mid length 16 in barrel)

The barrel extension is built into the barrel on a AR.  M4 cuts are supposed to help with feeding.

If you are using a low pro gas block on a mid-length setup you are gonna need a quad rail longer than 9 inches to cover it.

Some quad rail have there own barrel nut... some use a standard barrel nut. If you are getting a quad rail you may or may not need a delta ring assembly.  For instance a Centurion Arms quad rail doesnt use the delta ring so if you have one installed (unless you take the barrel off) you have to cut it off with a dremel or some other tool.  It attaches directly to the stock barrel nut.

So you have choices and don't rush into it .  make some choices... look at others setups and ask questions.

If I can get my camera set up later I will try and post some pics.  I have a pinned 14.5 with a 12 inch DD lite rail and a low pro gas block and a 14.5 pinned with a 9 inch with normal FSB.

I've had both the Spikes and BCM bcgs. Both are outstanding.

If you're going with a free float hanguard then you don't need a delta ring assy unless it's a DD Omega.

On a 16" mid you want at least an 11" handguard. That is of course unless you will be pinning a FSB to your barrel which is not entry level work.

There are only two/three rail systems that I know of that use the standard barrel nut. Rainier/Samson Evolution and Troy Alpha. Almost all other railed handguards will come with a proprietry barrel nut.

Thanks everyone for the insight! I'm excited to get my upper going!! Slow and steady with allot of research is what I'll be doing!

ok.. so did a little reserch and thinking that these are all the items i would need for this kind of build.. correct me if im wrong, just not ALL at once!!

Upper receiver from Spikes with door spring and pin.

BCG from bravo comp

16 inch mid length barrel or 16inch carbine (Not sure what the diff is just yet)

low pro gas block

mid length gas tube (will that fit for both 16 inch carbine and mid lenght barrels?)

free float quad hand guard thats 12 inches(whats the minimum length I could get by with?)

Barrel nut? or does that come with hand guard

flash hider thats already fixed to the barrel or buy a barrel that will accomidate a threaded one with a washer.

anything else beside some sights??

Thanks!

mid vs carbine is the length of the gas tube system this image from larue might help.  As far as performance and what you want your going to have to do some research or some of the more experienced members here could explain it.

also you only have to pin the muzzle device if the barrel is under 16in to make it a legal length

If you get a carbine.... you need a carbine gas tube... if you get a middy or mid-length you need a mid-length gas tube.

Get a barrel and add a flash hider or compensator of your choice with the crush washer. So yes threaded... most come threaded anyway  (Most..)

Yes you need a barrel nut unless you buy a quad rail that comes with its own nut.

A 10 inch rail is the shortest you can go with a low pro.  about 1/8 of a inch of low pro gas block will show
