I'm about to put together my first AR15 upper and i need a few tools. Was looking at the Brownells
AR15/M16 Critical tools kit. It comes with..
- Smith Enterprise Armorers Wrench
- Lower Receiver Vice Block
- Clam shell style Upper Receiver Vise Block
- Pivot Pin Installation Tool
- Bolt Catch Punch

Was wondering if anyone had any info about this set? Good/Bad quality??

I definitely need the Upper/Lower Vise Block and the Wrench. And Buying those parts alone are at 100,
And they sell all the above for 99 plus shipping. Just wondering on quality of the blocks and the wrench.
Any info from someone who has used / bought / owned would be very helpful. Thanks.

You can do it for less, with less if you want.

For the front pivot pin you can get a 1/4" hitch pin from a hardware store.

Clam shell is good, and so is the upper block sold through AIM or I think Brownells.

Roll pin punches are also good, Brownells sells a set of those and AIM has the captive style roll pin starter punches.

Barrel nut wrench is needed.

I have never needed a lower receiver block.

You don't need the pivot pin installation tool or the bolt catch punch. There are other ways to build your lower using things you should already own. Pivot pin just needs a razor blade and bolt catch just needs a pair of pliers. Google around and you'll see how people build without those tools.

For the armours wrench, you can get Palmetto State Armory wrench shipped for $25 with lifetime warranty. And the Model 1 Armorer's Action Block with Lower Receiver Action Block AR-15 should run you around $45. All great tools for building for $70.

While you're at Brownell's watch the AR building video series there at that site in the Guntech section.
All the tools used are identified.

I prefer to be tooled up with the AR-specific tool set.
You can do it with minimal, non-specific tools.

I don't think some are getting what I'm asking. I am familiar with the AR platform. I have put together many lowers. Haven't yet assembled an upper. I know I don't need the little tool for pivot pin instillation. I know I need punches. What I'm asking is this a quality set? Can it be had for less? If so... Could anyone point me in that direction? Thanks.

I used the method described in the tacked thread.....tape wraped vice grips for the roll pins.  You can use a plastic cutting board (cut to the proper dimensions) to hold the upper in a vice unless you are building an A2.  Clevis pin for the pivot pin install.  All you really need is a barrel wrench.

eta:  the package doesn't look like a bad deal if you want all the pieces

I'll try to actually answer your question.

Yes, most anything you get from Brownells is top notch.

But even if you get a lemon, everything they sell is covered 100% for life.  I've exchanged 15 year old tools from them.  Nobody stands behind their products like Brownells.

Having said that, I believe they do have less expensive armorer's wrenches for uppers.  Just browse through the entire set of AR tools and pick only what you need.
