I installed a YHM mid length on my first build and had to modify the end cap to get it to clear the gas tube.  The barrel is a Wilson Combat 16" match grade SS and the gas block is a low profile also from Wilson Combat.  I chose the end cap with the large diameter barrel opening because I didn't think that the small diameter would fit, or would make contact with the barrel.  I'm not complaining, I just never considered this possibility.

If you had used the smaller end cap you would not have had to cut it.  The large end cap is only for use on barrels using a .936 gas block which yours sure as heck is not.  The smaller end cap also does not leave such a large gap between barrel and cap and looks more finished.

That's what I figured –– after I did the mod.  I may just order the other end cap and chalk this one up to a learing experience.
