as much as i love my 10 pound carbine, i am thinking of doing a lightweight build. i was thinking of starting out with a used cav arms lower, a magpul moe handgaurd and iron sights.
where can i find a reduced weight bolt, and an upper with no FA and no dustcover? also, is there anyone who can pin and weld a 6 inch tube style flashhider to a 10 inch barrel? any help would be greatly appreciated! |

An 11.5" barrel with 5.5" flash hider is going to be heavy. The lightest 16" barrel on the market is Bushmaster's superlight. Get it chopped to 14.7 and have an A1 flash hider permanently mounted. For the upper, get a 9mm upper from RRA, Model 1, etc. You'll have to have it drilled for a gas tube. The short ejection port door and gas deflector come off just like a standard port door and can be replaced with a standard 5.56 unit. JP makes the lightest bolt carrier that's currently on the market. |

Adco can drill it if you want to spend the money, otherwise do it yourself. |

Quoted: ADCO sells the RRA 9mm upper, they can drill the hole before shipping it to you if you order from them. The Model 1 upper is a bit cheaper, and if you have a drill press, drilling the hole is pretty easy. I have no idea exactly how much weight you'd lose by chopping the barrel. If you're not stuck on the MOE handguards, then cut the FSB down as much as possible and install a Clark carbon fiber tube over it. You could either have a short section of rail mounted on top of the tube for a front sight, or go with a micro red dot. Quoted: Quoted: An 11.5" barrel with 5.5" flash hider is going to be heavy. The lightweight bolt carrier isn't going to need as much gas to operate as a standard carrier. You can either make up the weight with a heavier buffer, or use an adjustable gas system to dial the gas down. MGI makes an adjustable gas tube, and several companies make .625 adjustable gas blocks. |

For the flash supressor......make one from aluminum......it too can be pinned and welded....done it more than once....
and just for info.......I took a 16 inch Colt lightweight sporter upper with an A2 carry handle receiver, stuck it on a Cav arms lower......and it weighed in less than 6 pounds.....Have to wait till I get to the shop and check my notes to find the exact weight. |

Quoted: What about on 5.56mm? I'd be more worried about the muzzle blast eroding it than it getting beat up. If it'll hold up fine though, then I'm definitely interested in one.I have one on my prototype AR45....and it has been beating around in the back of my truck for several years now with no ill effects..... ![]() |

Got your PM.....99% of my AR shooting is in pistol caliber and the aluminum muzzle devices hold up fine.......will be running some tests with the Aluminum......and if it holds up well.......then I may make them an offering down the road....already have a member here lined up to do a beta test on one on a 5.56 rifle, and I'll let him post the results here...... |
