Hi all,
My name is Damon, new to the forum and ar-15's but not firearms in general. Lot's of great info here and friendly people. Got a few questions for you guys/gals. Got my lower finished up. Just need to add buffer and stock and it will be complete. My question is if it is possible to build the rest of the gun for around $450? I would like to put together as much as possible. Wanted to go A2 style but with my budget it looks like I will be going flat-top and I can add a carry handle later if I must. Any ideas on parts/manufacturers? I would paste my Midwayusa parts list in my cart but their site seems to be down. Thanks in advance for any and all advice! Damon |
| A couple good sites to check out: aimsurplus.com, joeboboutfiters.com, ammo surplus, or surplus ammo? also check out sota arms. vt supply ismy favorite. you will find that you can probably get a complete upper cheaper than you can build. I know, it sucks! I chose to build my own to get only what I wanted and nothing I dont but it will cost you. Have fun!! |

noticed midwayusa has dpms upper assembly for $349.99, thats right in my budget and will leave room for a butt stock. I hope that $349 includes BCG, stupid site still down.

Heres is a few parts I have decided to go with for the upper. Haven't ordered anything yet due to needing the forum's advice on everything matching and working properly.
Midway - Daniel Defense Stripped A4 Flat-Top Upper - $92.00 Spikes Tactical - Ejection Door Install Kit - $3.50 Spikes Tactical - Forward Asst Kit - $12.00 Spikes Tactical - Engraved Eject. Door - $9.99 Spikes Tactical - VLTOR BCM Mod 4 Med. Charging Handle - $44.95 TOTAL - $162.44 This totals $162.44 for a completed upper (if I am not missing anything), I don't know if you consider the BCG a part of the Upper Assembly when having a "complete" upper but I do know I left that out. Is this a decent price with the parts given for a complete upper? To stay close to budget I was looking at the Surplus Ammo Complete BCG for $94.99, here's the link - http://www.surplusammo.com/products/SA%26A-AR15-Complete-Bolt-Carrier-Group%252d-.223%7B47%7D5.56.html Seems to have good reviews for the money! Anyone had experience with this BCG or heard anything good/bad about it? If I go that route I'll have a total of $257.43 invested in the upper. This leaves me with a barrel choice that I definitely need ideas on. I want 5.56. I am going for carbine length and will be using the DPMS handguards that "snap-on" for $19.99 I think it was. I know finding a barrel will put me over the $400 budget but I'm willing to add a little to it to have a completely custom gun and more importantly that I built from scratch and know every part inside. Please give me some barrel options along with finishing parts that need to complete install (minus butt-stock). Thanks in advance! I'll add some pics of the lower I assembled in a few. Damon |
