Decided to jump in and build my first AR. This will also be my introduction to the platform. I thought, "What better way to get to know the gun than build it." I can already see that this is going to be a problem for me. I have a feeling it could get to be a very expensive hobby/disease. Anyway.... I decided to go with a Spike's lower and, after reading a lot, decided on a DPMS lpk. I probably could have gone the Spikes route or something held in higher regard,But, it doesn't look too bad. I didn't see or feel and rough surfaces or edges. I haven't started assembling it yet, as I need to get a set of roll pin punches. And, I'm trying to decide if I want to go with a pistol build first. (I can always configure it it as a rifle later.) My biggest question is.... should I try to build myself the upper as well? Or should I let the pros do it? That's really the only part that I'm worried about if it doesn't work. (KaBoom?) Also, as far as online retailers, who's good to deal with?

Oh yeah..... pic of the lower.

Why did you choose a DPMS lpk vs say, a Daniel Defense or High Standard or Stag or PSA?

Honestly? My lgs had it in the case and the price didn't seem too bad. Should I go ahead and get one of those you mentioned instead?

Ditch it, DPMS isn't regarded very well for their LPK quality

Check out aim surplus, they carry few options and have free shipping, just avoid the stainless steel LPK's - they are crap.
