Howdy, all.
The wife has decided it is time for her to compete alongside me at the CFDCC.org matches. I am thrilled. She wants a shorter rifle than mine (I run a 20" A2), and likes the look of the Vietnam-era Dissipators. I was looking at this: http://www.dsarms.com/DSA-ZM4-A3-Upper-Receiver-16-Barrel-Mid-Length-HG––-DSZM4CBUMID/productinfo/DSZM4CBUMID/ Due to the price, it makes sense, but I really want to change it over to a dissipator. (Yes, I do want mid-length over a carbine-length system, as I want the lower to remain interchangable with her 20" free-floated, scoped upper). I have a rifle length MOE in my spare parts collection, but I figured I would need to buy a low-profile gas block (YHM has them for like $27.99). Now, the question is, what other considerations do I need to take before undertaking this project. Can I simply re-use the front-sight gas block like I would like to do, or do I need a new one? Any other suggestions would help immensely. |

I see a couple of problems with the upper you are looking at.
First, it's fluted, so moving the front sight post forward may not work. Second, you will need to have it pinned up front, or buy a bolt-on from YHM or JP, etc. which increases the cost. Personally, you are better off getting a dedicated dissy out of the gate. A PSA dissy will cost you $510 with BCG. Swap in your MOE handgaurd and you're done minus the rear sight. Seems more expensive but it isn't when you consider all the parts and time. Plus you get a better barrel, and a great BCG/CH, etc. |

Geez guys, I'm doing the same myself - sort of (the hard way).
@bonedale - If I looked here first, the PSA option looks easier than what I'm doing. Even if I pulled the upper receiver off for the one I plan to use, it would still make $$ sense. I just bought a bunch of dark earth anodized Spike's Tactical uppers and a lower and I'm doing it as a "SHTF FDE Rifle Kit". One upper is being built out as a Dissy with MOE rifle handguards. The other is being built out as a sniper setup with JP 22" barrel and Daniel Defense RIS II 12.5" rails and bipod. I will put the whole setup in a bug-out rig. My setup for the dissy is a DD 16" M4 hammer forged barrel 1:7 with PRI low profile gas block and a PRI front rail gas block as a sight base only. I'll use a melonited carbine gas tube, Spikes enhanced fire control kit and Spikes Nickel Boron BCG. For sights: Troy Tritium BUIS, front HK style, rear diamond style. There's a guy on here that does awesome Duracoat artwork and camo. I'll have him do the Aimpoint M4S and magnifier and I'm set. If I just picked up the PSA upper, pulled off the receiver and subbed my Spike's FDE receiver, it would have saved me alot of foraging for parts. I like the mid-length gas system better for some reason, but I'm already into it a bit. What the heck right? It is a hobby and building these is fun! Surfing around looking for parts is part of the fun too I guess, along with waiting for the Big Brown Gun Toys Truck. Kevin -=-=- "PropellerHead" |
