I am about to start my first AR build soon. I purchased a stripped lower from PSA and will be picking it up from my FFL this week. I will be buying everything else (upper, LPK, etc) next month once I receive my tax return (I like to file early ). I am going to buy some roll pin punches from PSA probably, but does it matter what kind of hammer that I use? Do I need to use a nylon/brass hammer or could a regular hammer work? I do plan on using visegrips to press a couple of the pins in, but just want a clarification on what everyone else uses. Thanks in advance!

i used NO punches and had no problems. i did the vise-grip trick on the bolt catch and trigger guard, and the handle of a small screwdriver to press in the rest.

........but if you are buying them, use them. i'd get a small brass/nylon hammer (two sided). i think they still make them LOL. if not, my age is showing

you really don't need a 16oz framing hammer to drive in roll pins.

Steel hammer with roll pin punches, but nylon/brass hammers are very useful at times.

Thanks guys. PSA has a tool kit that comes with punches and a hammer... http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/accessories/tools/hand-tools/wheeler-engineering-hammer-punch-set-w-plastic-case.html. Was just wondering if I could just buy the punches and get by with the hammer I already own. Definitely looking forward to getting this rifle up and going, if only my W-2 would come in sooner...

I use ballpeen hammers in several weights.
Think small.
There are many kinds of hammers a number of which would be inappropriate.
