Hi all,

First off this is a great site.  I own and shot pistols and have never owned a rifle.  I'm looking to build an AR15 for range shooting and home protection.  I've never built a rifle before and looking to build one that around 500-750 easily snap together, but upgradeable later.   Also, is my price range reasonable?  Any suggestions you all might have would be great.  Let me know if you need more detail.

It can be done. If looking for advice on build ideas we need to know what kinda target shooting you will be doing. Do a lot of reading and figure out what you want before you start buying or else you will over shoot your budget.  Also check on equip. Exchange (orange tab on right side) for some used parts. Welcome and have fun

A good place to start is here:http://palmettostatearmory.com/AR-rifle-kits.php

Just add lower receiver & rear sight.

If you're like many of us, you will build one, then realize that what you really want is a bit different.  Which leads to Build #2.  And it progresses from there.

Unless you plan on buying some special tools, not that many but adds to your cost, I would get a complete upper and build the lower. A more reasonable price range is $650 - $750, leaning more towards $750. ~$600 (closer to $650) will get you the rifle but you still need sights/scope, magazines, sling, case and ammo. It will be pretty basic but, as you said, you can add to it later. You might be able to sell the old parts to recoupe a little money. Don't count on getting much though. It will probably either turn into a second rifle or pay it forward to one of your buddies.

Before this turns into a "I can build one for $500" topic. Yes, it may be possible with Black Friday sales and friends with this hobby as well but that would be the exception not the norm. My opinion only.

And +1 for PSA

Agree completely. Look into the EE and keep an eye on postings there for sales and whatnot. Take your time, read a lot and start basic so you dont spend on unneeded goods. For $700 you can have a rather swanky rifle.
