Which kind of vice block is best for the upper and installing barrels?
The one that clamps around the upper or the one that uses the take down pins to hold it down? |

I researched the same thing just a few months ago, and I went with a clam shell type because I was worried just using the two tabs on the bottom of the receiver would not be strong enough for removing a tight nut on the barrel. Have read reviews saying they work very well for this but I still went with a Clam shell. A Model 1 from Mid-way I think I could have gone with either one and been happy http://i656.photobucket.com/albums/uu290/rgerh913/Firearms/AR%2015/035-2.jpg" /> +1 |

Hard to beat. I have both and the clam-shell design is better for building. I use the other style for other things that don't require the same stress on the receiver. |
