I'm working on a CMMG lower a guy has, that has a strange bolt catch issue.

This fellow assembled the lower himself, using he said, a CMMG LPK. The bolt catch was correctly installed, but has extremely limited movement. It might move 1/32" when pressing the bottom of the catch into the receiver, meaning the blot catch seems to be hung up somewhere and doesn't work.

I've tried another bolt catch and spring and detent, but to the same result. When installed, both catches fail to function. Both freely move laterally, showing the notch and ears for the bolt catch isn't too tight, it's just vertically they don't function.

I'm now thinking the lower receiver is simply out of spec.

Any experience with this issue? I've never come across this before and neither have my AR jedi masters.

Thanks,
MF

Make sure you have the correct spring and that the detent will press into the hole and return under spring pressure before instaling the catch.

It does. That was one of the first things I made sure of.

I had the same issue on a lower, I found some kind of crud in the detent spring hole...appeared to be possibly blasting media...i ran a drill bit down the hole ,cleaned it out and was good to go...I tried swapping parts between different lowers to rule out parts issues..it came down to my lower and the build up in the hole. YMMV.

Yeah that was another thought I had, and unfortunately it wasn't the case. Looks like this lower is going back to CMMG.

Not mentioned in the OP, the mag well is too tight as well... USGI and Pmags won't drop freely. Smaller dimensioned HK mags drop free. So that's a additional issue.
