I first posted this in the 'Refinishing' section of the Armory and got one reply.  I probably should have posted in the DIY AR section.  Anyway, any thoughts on the questions posed below? ––––>

I've fantasized about ARs for a couple of years now and am now diving in to my first build. As I look at finishes, something struck me and I'm about to ask a total newbie question that may be ridiculed but I'm hoping you'll entertain it, nonetheless.

So let me set up the question...I'm an avid archer and I've customized wraps, fletching, bows...when it comes to customizing archery gear, nothing is off limits. 3D target bows are all colors, finishes, etc. But as I look an AR15.com, I rarely see finishes other than variations of black, khaki, camo, etc...I see the occasionally pink and I saw a blue and a purple lower.

Is it considered in bad taste or 'culturally' looked down upon (...the AR culture being 'the culture'...) to customize an AR15 with a variety of colors? I don't believe I've seen NFL or college themed AR finishes. Is this considered 'blasphemous'? I've been searching the site and pouring over threads so maybe I just missed it somewhere.

If someone dropped in at the range with an AR etched and colored with their favorite college theme, would they be ridiculed?

Thanks!

It may be ridiculed but it's your rifle, build it as you please.

Just google images of AR-15 space guns. You'll see all the colors or the rainbow.

I wouldn't ridicule you ;) I guess most guys around here either just favor simple color themes or don't have the resources to make a real elaborate one, but like someone said it's rifle build it exactly how YOU want it, who cares what others think. Also I don't really watch much college sports (my school doesn't get our football team till 2013, & basketball isn't my thing) and the Panthers are my team for NFL, so I'm sure you could understand why I wouldn't want to really paint anything panthers related this season...

I don't know about it being considered 'in bad taste,' it's just 'unconventional.' Since the AR is basically a military-styled weapon, that is just the 'conventional' direction for finishing/furnishing. Unless camouflaging/obscuring your presence is a factor, the sky is the limit, IMO.  On a 'serious operator' type of site it may get ridiculed, but at the range you'll probably find you get more compliments than complaints. Unless you pick the wrong college team for the area.

Too many tutti-fruity colors can change an AR from bad-ass to candy-ass. ymmv

It's a tactical rifle.  Black is "normal."  You are departing the "normal" build when you customize.  I am a military person, and I live for the tactical part of the tactical rifle.  However, I will probably build one as something custom before it's all over.

There was a time when all black bakelite was the normal.  Now look what MAGPUL and other companies have done...Greens and Tans.  For the people that riducule...Better not have FDE or OD green parts on your gun.  I actually like the custom paint jobs, designs, and what not - If done fairly professional.  I love the Rite colored magpul parts on some of the guns...Camo and the digital camo are beautiful when beautifully done.

I don't disagree some will ridcule, but it's ultimately your weapon.  I love airbrushing, so I tend to look at these when posted where others probably just close and move on.  To agree with the others...I saw a TERRIBLE FN painted at the last gunshow in Pensacola.  It was TERRIBLE!  He couldn't give it away.  Just things to think about.

Just remember that once the paint hits the metal...It's yours, and it takes a special person to buy certain colors, combinations, ect if you ever decide to sell it.  Some have said that as soon as paint hits the metal you devalued the rifle...Can't totally disagree....Even if you try to take off an sell on EE.
