It's done all the time. Just install a low pro gas block in place of the FSB & you can install a longer rail over it.

You can put a rifle length over a carbine gas system - It's just longer.  If you want to JUST cover check out the SPECTER length rails for those that offer it.

For SPECTER check out YHM.   http://www.yhm.net/

Thanks TANGO!  You are quick on the draw for the YHM...I love the one on mine.  I also have a Troy TRX, but I don't think they make a SPECTER length.

Any 9" rail will cover a gas block on a carbine length gas system.  The only reason for YHM's specter length rail is their endcap.  If you use a YHM midlength rail with a 1.9" gas block (cut down FSB, etc.) you won't have room to install the endcap.  If you use a 1" gas block, you'll have plenty of room to install the endcap.

IMO, YHM filled a void at one point in time.  They made a decent quality product at a decent price.  The only other options were high quality products at high prices.  Now, there are plenty of high quality products at only slightly higher prices than YHM.

Josh is right.  The YHM Specter is 9.6" or something like that.  The Mid is 9".  The Specter does make some room for the end cap, and I don't think I would ever recommend that to anyone after putting it on.  You have to loctite it with purple loctite they provide, and it makes it so you have to take the FH off if you want to tear it down.  Is that much to ask, no.  However, it looked great beforehand.

YHM and Troy are fantastic products.  Troy comes with the tools to mount it.  It is a beautiful product, but the two pinching screws at the bottom of the rail is kind of wierd goofy setup considering the quality of this piece.  The YHM requires you to buy a tool to tighted the rail nut, and it doesn't have an alignment tab like the Troy.  However, it didn't take much to get it 100% aligned.  Either are great products in their own right, but I would probably put on another YHM if I bought another.  There are some other MFGs out there, but some are $200-250+ dollars...Not yet.

There are multiple makers of 9-10" rails that clamp down on the stock barrel nut that will give you what you want.  MI, Troy, and Daniel Defense are just a few off the top of my head.

Figure out what style you want.... full quad rail or tube type with the option for added rail sections.

Figure out a budget for the rail you want.

Start shopping around.
