I am assembling a lower at this very moment and the spring in question is the one for buffer retainer. I have two springs  that are the same diameter but different lengths. One is 1" and the other is 1.25" and they both fit. Which one do I use and what is the other one for? It is a bushmaster spring kit. Thanks

The shorter one.
Strange as it may sound the long one is for the charging handle.

I got a bunch of the long ones left from Bushmaster spring kits. When they say complete kit it is.

What about the little kind of "C" shaped black one? That is the only other one that has me stomped.

Olny C shaped thing I know of is the c clip that goes on the end of the rod/pin in the port door cover. Clip is on the end by the barrel.

If it is the c shaped thin flat spring that is about 3/8" wide it is the rear sight aperature spring the goes under the flip sight.
