I recently put a rock river lower parts kit on a olympic lower receiver.  The front pivot pin is so tight I need a hammer to completely close it and a punch to open it.  Does anyone have any advice or answers on the reason for this and how to fix the problem.

Something is undersized/oversized (tolerance stacking) or you are doing it wrong!

The front pin is set in place first, then the upper and lower are closed and the rear pin is set.  It is not unusual for the rear pin on some builds to be tight.  Most will "wear in" and eventually be easier to seat.

Oil it up and work it back and forth a few times to get it to wear in.  Most will loosen up over time.

When you installed it did you make sure the spring and detent tunnel on the receiver was clean?  Sometimes anodizing will block the tunnel a little making the spring pressure on the detent and pin really tight.  A 4-40 drill bit used by hand will clean it out.  You probably would have noticed this when you installed it though because it would have been pretty hard to depress the detent to clear the pin.

This.  You will be suprised how fast it loosens up with use.

It's an Oly lower - they make them tight by design.  It's probably still stated on their website, about that.  It won't loosen up over time, either.  Only way to change that is to measure and hone the holes.

Try the pin by itself with no detent.  Measure the OD of your pin....it should be about .247" along its entire length.
