Is there a trick to change out a dust cover without mangling the little c-clip?

Yeah, that's the way I did it. Gotta be careful not to damage the clip or lose it, but it's easier than taking the barrel off.

Alright, thanks guys.  I have put dust covers on, but never taken one off... So just open up the clip a bit and slide it off, that's it right?

Just pull it off, pull perpendicular to the pin from the center of the clip and it will pop off.

To reattach, hold the clip on the side with the pliers and put it over the slot in the pin, then apply force straight in at the center of the clip and it will pop back on.

I tried to be careful and smooshed it.  And if you do get it off in one piece, by god, don't drop it.

I just keep a couple on hand in the parts box now.

Good luck.

You definitely need a clear workspace so you can find it.

By the way they have those clips in the True Value Hardware Bin section if you screw yours up...I think they are 1/8 if I remember correctly and I purchased a complete kit of those from Harbor Frieght for 7 bucks for all the sizes......

Lay a plastic bag from the dry cleaners over rhe upper and use it for a "glove box"

It makes it a little harder to loose the flea.

USE eye wear
