I finally received my upper receiver that I ordered from surplus ammo.com.  I am not happy with the fit of upper. I tried on four different lowers and it was loose on all of them. Does anyone here ever used their stripped upper receivers?  If so how was fit? I think in the future I will stck with spikes, even though the last spikes upper I got from aim surplus is extremely tight on my spikes lower and has to be removed with punch and hammer!

This isnt saying too much but my Aero upper from SAA fits my Aero lower from a gun show like a champ.

I have purchased three and installed accu-wedges in all of them... But I do agree I have a all spikes gun and love it.... I did build it my self though just purchased everything but the barrel from them....But that dosent make these uppers bad... I have not had any problems with there uppers other thafit... But even the uppers I got from LAR were alittle loose also.....that has no effect on the guns proformance. In fact on my sons gun I could easily take it apart with the use of no tools untill I installed an Accu-Wedge and now I have to use a bullet or plastic tipped tool to break it apart....Again its a personal thing and never has it effected the use.....

What is loose?

If it wiggles a bit its fine. If anything I prefer that to too tight.

Any upper can be "loose"  it has to do with tolerances.  So you obviously got one that is leaning towards the looser end of the tolerances.. no big deal.  Have you tried contacting SAA and explaining what is wrong and asking them to exchange it with another?

It has NOTHING to do with brands.

In fact i believe (could be wrong as spikes changes out their manufacturers sometimes) that both the spikes and the SAA uppers are both made by Aero Precision.   Granted that Spikes probably has their own set of tolerances that they request from Aero but still there are a set of tolerances involved no matter what.

It is luck of the draw on upper and lower fit, you CANNOT classify upper and lower fit just on brand name, it is an individual case by case basis... except for one particular brand that is notorious for waaay too tight tolerances.

Call up SAA and allow them the chance to fix your cosmetic problem.

all manufacterers seem to have variances in tolerance.  I find the Aero's to be the best I have ever built on.  Their uppers fit their lowers perfectly, I have not had a sloppy fit yet.  I tried an Aero upper on a DPMS lower that I have, that was a little sloppy, it was still sloppy, so im sure its the lower thats on the loose side.  You can mix and match all day to find the perfect fit.  The first AR I ever built was about 25 years ago, it was an Olympic Arms, back when they had the only sub-MOA gun, the "ultramatch".  I bought a complete CAR kit for $369, when everything, even the lower was included.  Received it and the fit between the upper and lower was so bad, I called them up, complained, they paid shipping back and handpicked me replacements that were so tight, I had to tap them together.  My brother still shoots that gun and its still tight.  Currently, I wont buy anything but the Aero's, quality at every angle,  $75 for a lower and $59 for a stripped upper.

Got one directly from SAA at a gunshow (they're local ) and it fits with my Palmetto lower pretty good.  I'm no expert but it's got a snug fit on the front, a tiny bit of resistance in lining them up and sliding it in but no resistance to rotating it upon and closed.

Of the complaints I've seen against Surplus Arms I can say I've been happy to see that in every case they have been very helpful in accommodating the customer to make things right.  If it's bad enough to worry you in terms of function, give them a ring.

(no I'm not affiliated with them, but I did like them enough to be ordering a 5 pack)

What forge mak on the side?  Anchor harvey or Cerro?

The Palmetto and Aero uppers I have ordered fit nice and snug.  may have somethng to do with the finish feeling thicker.  I have a SAA lower and several PSA lowers and I believe they were both done by Aero, but the finish on the PSA is thicker than the SAA.

I have had 3 SAA with Aero uppers.  Fit snug in the pivot.  The takedown is a snap to push.  The lower and upper wigggle a bit in the take down area when just stripped.  When fully assembled...They are accepably tight.

Anchor harvey forge mark. I tried on Bushmaster, Dpms,  spikes and armalite lowers. It was loose on all them. I have a PSA lower I will try on it once lower is assembled.

The forge mark on the side has nothing to do with it.

Maybe a lemon? I bought an Aero lower and an Aero upper from them. Fits really nice, no need for accu wedge at this point. Shipping was a little bit slow, but nothing to really complain about.

Give 'em a call about it, what could it hurt?

NOT a lemon.

Tolerances. If they fit together, snap shut, lock closed, and dont have a huge gap between them they are in spec.  Loose or tight means nothing at all except cosmetically.

It would be a lemon if it didn't function properly.... as it is from what he has told us, it is just regular tolerances.

All my Aero Precision uppers have a good snug fit on my Aero Precision lowers. Now my NOVESKE stripped upper and lower set that I bought locally has a little bit of play between them but it does not bother me a bit as it still functions properly. I used the Noveske upper and lower set for my 6.8 build.

Absolutely this - excellent post.
People need to understand that this (and many other aspects of the AR15 world) are often beyond branding.

Well finally got around to check the aero upper on my spikes lower from another build good tight fit. I think I will use that lower to complete the build and order another spikes lower to replace that lower! Problem solved!

My AP upper fits real snug on the pivot lug but opens nice and easy on my PA lower. No play at all with the combo.
