Been looking around and so far I have an idea of what I want my first AR to look like and what I want to use it for. I have a black and chrome/SS kind of look going. Haven't decided on handguard or optics yet. So that being said, here is a tentative list of parts I have so far:

DSA Upper Reciever ($110)
DSA Steel Charging Handle ($55)
RRA Chrome BCG ($130)
RRA 16" SS Bull Barrel ($270)
DSA Stripped Lower ($120)
LPK SS ($58)
Magpul CTR Stock ($92)
Handguard - Undecided
Optics - Undecided

Any thoughts? Looking to solidify what I'm after and then start having some fun getting these parts and building

DSA Steel Charging Handle ($55) = why?
LPK SS ($58) = Operation Parts  or someone had them at $43

I have to agree. If you are going to spend that much on a charging handle, might as well make it a BCM Gunfighter

Well is there much difference in a steel charging handle verses just a simple $14 charging handle?

I've been using standard CH for years and never broken one or bent one so I don't see any real benefit to a heavier steel one for my applications.

I guess the steel one would be more difficult to bend but unless your planning on doing lots of charging of your weapon while on the run over rough terrain I wouldn't worry about it.

AIM Surplus has Spikes BCG's for $109, if you' re set on the Hard Chrome look, they are $139. Both have free shipping. I was looking at the RRA one too till I saw the spikes. The warranty can't be beat and it's an M-16 vs. an AR-15. That part really doesn't mean all that much, but seeing how it's going in a SBR, the added weight may come in handy.

DSA Upper Reciever ($110) BCM upper (99.95 + shipping)
DSA Steel Charging Handle ($55) (WTF?)
RRA Chrome BCG ($130) (Only if you like the look of a chromed BCG)
RRA 16" SS Bull Barrel ($270)
DSA Stripped Lower ($120) Palmetto State Armory lower (79.95 w/ free shipping)
LPK SS ($58) Don't know if there is any added benefit to getting a SS LPK. Get the Geiselle LPK from PSA for 199.95. This gives you a good trigger for your rifle
Magpul CTR Stock ($92) Might want to get a heavier stock to offset the SS Bull Barrel, like an EMOD, PRS, or UBR
Handguard - Undecided Troy TRX Extreme or DD lite
Optics - Undecided

Thanks for the reply. This is the reason I'm asking a lot of questions, so I don't make a somewhat stupid mistake!!!

What is the difference between the regular Palmetto lower and the "Gadsen" Palmetto receiver?

Is that all? How come the color or the finish looks different between the 2?
5/12/2011 12:59:34 PM EDT
[#12]
one was taken with a flash in low lighting, the other was taken in more natural lighting with no flash?

the other pictures look like the same black anodized finish you see on all ARs

Yeah I figured it was just something with the lighting or the camera used. Thanks. Just trying to continue to research everything

no one is going to fault you for asking questions like this...

what tends to make folks not want to help you is a) blatantly ignoring the tacked threads, b) asking the same question that's covered in a few other active threads, and c) acting like you know better than everyone and when posting your build list for critique defending every widget like your life depended on it despite never owning an AR or using the products in question...

good luck with your build

Thanks. I read some of the tacked threads, but I still like to get people's opinions on it. I put my tentative build list up because first, I really am new and so wanted feedback, and two, I received great feedback that possibly is going to save me money and build a better AR. I appreciate it.

Personally I have broken a charging handle but it because I had the habit of chaging the rifle and letting go of the handle and it slams foward.... soon after I had to replace it so I purchased a Spikes handle since my gun was almost all spikes....

As opposed to which method?  Riding the charging handle?
