Hey Guys.  I need to find a way to get my castle nut sinched down pretty tight to where it doesnt keep backing off.  I do not have the CAR tool and I have just always hand tightened.  I put a little tape on some wide mouth pliers but could still tell it was gouging the castle nut and I did not want that.  Any other remedies without buying the tool?  Should I use just a little blue locktite?  Any tips pointers would be great.

Purchace the 10 dollar tool and do it right. Make sure the tool will fit at least 3 detents.

This... and maybe stake it after you tighten it! SD79

You want to borrow my wrench? Let me know & I'll send it to you.

You could use channel locks after wrapping the nut to protect it.  Personally, I use the proper wrench and stake the nut.

I used a little blue loctite and used a screwdriver to tighten it.  I noticed afterward I put on the nut "backwards", but didn't plan on staking it anyways.  Key thing is only cover maybe a few threads with the loctite, not the whole nut.

Why do it wrong?

Just get the wrench, tighten it properly and stake it.

If your castle nut loosens it will render your rifle useless…

Ok I guess if it’s just a plinker, but if you EVER need it
to save your life wouldn’t you want to be able to trust it?

I don’t get the whole "cutting corners is ok when building a
rifle” thing.

Would you hand tighten the lug nuts on your car and then
drive 70mph on the highway and hope your wheels don’t fall off?...

No, you would use a lug wrench and do it right…

This is a rifle we are talking about here… not an arts and
crafts project.

A hammer and screwdriver will work if you don't mind dinging up your castle nut a bit.  If not, any automotive parts store or Sears will have a cheap spanner wrench that you can buy that will work perfectly.

If you have a piece of hardwood like a hammer handle, you can shape it to fit a groove in the castle nut. Then drive it with a hammer. This will work if your fairly sure that this is the only time you will ever need to install or uninstall a castle nut.

If you want a tool, get one with 3 lugs for about $12.
Some of the cheap spanner type wrenches will mark the finish.

For the four bucks more I'd get the three prong model.
You might not own a .45 but chances are your AR has a flash hider.
