Edit: Supposed to be "Questions about a stripped upper build", not lower... already have the stripped lower built, and I'm pretty sure it's even built correctly.

I've started in on my first AR & already built my lower (with the exception of torquing down the buffer tube) & am probably going to be ordering the upper here early next month. Planning on a 16" mid length SHTF & range gun for my first build. Down the road black gun #2 will probably be a 6.8 or 6.5 or something more accurate long range gun for varmints & hunting.

I was planning on just getting a BCM BFH 16" Mid Length Upper Receiver Group w/ LaRue Tactcial 9" Handguard or the like, but have realized that's probably not in line with my philosophy... I'm a geek & will probably get as much enjoyment out of learning about AR's, how to build it & actually building it as I will actually shooting it. Not to say I won't enjoy shooting it, but it's one of those life is a journey as much as a destination 'n crap things. At any rate I want to know my gun inside & out so I can fix anything that ever breaks as well.

What would I need to do the upper myself vs. just buying one? Upper, Barrel, handguard, gas block, gas tube, flash hider, charging handle, BCG. Ejection port cover & forward assist depending on if the upper is stripped or not. Any particular recommendations or things I'm missing?

What tools (I'm almost as big of a tool junky as I am  a geek) will I end up needing? A Panther Claw, Barrel Vice, or what? Seen several threads talking about the various vices or blocks, but not quite sure what the different purposes & benefits/drawbacks are. I already have a Aim sports Stock Combo Wrench.
I've been lurking around these forums for almost a year now off and on trying to get everything figured out before I started this build. Thanks for being such a great source of info.

well first and most important i think is a good VISE..  it dont have to be an expensive one but it does have to be a good one.. as far as it has to work and it should be sturdy and mounted to a good firm bench or work station... it just makes everything easier if you start out iwth a good work suface.. next woould be a good upper reciever vise jaw... i have one that i picked up at a gun show that has a sun on it... not sure the name or brand of it but it works well enough for me... i dont know if the panther claw is a good choice im sure it will suffice but i know the reciever vise block works well...
the other thing that you might want to pick up is a strap wrench i picked up a cheapy one from harbhor frieght :
http://www.harborfreight.com/2-piece-rubber-strap-wrench-set-94119.html

here is a tool you might want to pick up just becuase like you said your a tool guy the upper reciever lapping tool:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=810457

a good non-marring hammer (at least an 8-12oz brass hammer or multi-surface hammer) and good punch set

a black paint marker or some kind of touch up incase you booger it up...
a torque wrench is a must...  i use the harbor frieght speacil...
an allen set..
some lock tight and some clp...

im sure there are some tools her i left out!!!
but this should give you agood head start

Already have a good vice, 6" I think, along with the strap wrench & punches (may need to get some brass ones and roll pin punches... or finally get that mini-lathe and make my own, but I digress).

Would you recommend a AR-15/M16 UPPER RECEIVER ACTION BLOCK over a Panther Claw? Is there anything that one can do that the other can't? Is a barrel vice needed in addition to either of those for any activities?
