hello, I'm new to the site and also new to the whole gun scene. I was looking online at prices of new, used, and gun kits for ar15's. Whats the best brand gun kit I could go with? I want the best bang for my buck.- Thanks, Adam

You first should decide what you want this rifle to be; what you want to do with it.

Range only, home defense, as light as possible, precision tack driver, etc.

That will dictate which "path" you should take.

P.S.  The problem with asking an open ended question like that, hell ANY question on ARFCOM is you will receive 87,000 answers...which may not seem like much help at first, so stand by.

Adam -

By no means am I an expert.  I asked the same question about 4 days ago, so take what I have to say with a huge grain of salt...I mean huge.  I knew I wanted an AR so I went to my local gun shop and looked at the only model they had.  A Daniel Defense.  Lucky for me the guy there didn't have much to do b/c we talked for 1 hr about the gun.  He disassembled & reassembled it for me.  Showed me where and how to lube it.  And we discussed the AR in general.  Like I said I was really lucky.  He also told me about AR15.com.  This was a blessing.  Check out my post from Friday night.  It is titled “Buying my 1st AR and I need advice”.  It is in the AR Discussion forum.  I’ll try and attach a link if I can, but if you type “Buying my 1st AR” in the search you should be able to get to it.

Anyway after I did a little more research, I decided what 3 or 4 ARs liked the best (no real rhyme or reason why I like them I just did) and I posted my message.  The guys on this website f@#king rock.  They let me know which of my ARs they liked and recommended a few as well.  They brought up several points on upgrades, barrel twist, carbine length and ammo.  Stuff I never thought of.  I did a little more research when someone introduced a new AR company or a thing I never heard of (like barrel twist or carbine length vs mid-length).  Then I posted another message.  They answered quickly.  As with anything, I did my research and didn’t take anything as gospel.

I’m not going to tell you what to get, but I’ll tell you how I looked at the situation and my outcome.  One poster told me to get a bare bone AR, learn about the gun and decide from there.  I took that lesson to heart.  Since I am also new to ARs, I decided to get a bare bones AR that was highly recommended by the guys on this website.  A lot of guys told me to go with the Daniel Defense or Spike’s Tactical.  Some also said Bravo Company.  I looked at Spike’s website and decided to go with them.  I also liked the fact that the CEO posts on AR15.com.  Spike’s seemed to have a good rep with customer service and quality.  I ended up getting the ST-15 Mid-Length LE Carbine with the Troy rear sight.  It was just under $900.  Spike has the option of dressing it up, but I figured (and like one other poster said) I can build one at a later date…a real later date.  For now I am super happy with what I got.  I cannot attest to the way the gun shoots, since I have never shot it.  I just have to trust the guys on this website.  There is also a Spike’s forum under the Industry section.  Lots of good stuff here.  I learned how to field strip and assemble an AR though kick ass pics and a video.  Surf around and do your research.  Like I said I am not, by any means, no way and expert or even someone who knows anything.  I’m just like you, a guy who wants a quality product for his hard earned money.

You’ve come to the right place though!  Sorry for the length of this monster post.  Good luck buddy!!

Hey Adam,
Another company that has a solid reputation is Del-Ton (also a site sponsor, look at tabs up top). Since you are brand new to firearms in general, I would second the "bare bones" concept. Every shooter is different, but each will proclaim his way to be the absolute best. You'll have to experiment somewhat, and read a lot of reviews. When first considering the AR system, it is quite easy to become overwhelmed with all the options available, so find guys on here that share your opinions, and take their suggestions. The coolest part of owning an AR is that you can dress up up for just about any situation (as long as you have the cash ). I personally waited 2 years after joining afrcom and buying a stripped lower before I could find everything I wanted so my first AR could be just right. Do yourself a favor, get the plain Jane, and turn her into the prom queen.

Welcome to ARFCOM Adam.

I will tell you something. any rifle you choose to build that someone on here gives advise about will be a pretty good rifle. No one is going to steer you wrong.

I like Del-Tons. In my eyes for what I do, they are great. I always have been the sort of guy that roots for the underdog. The up and coming company. Del-Ton in my eyes is the premier Up and coming company. They provide a very nice product at the best price that they can.

My first kit was $465+ $20 shipping and i put it on a lower that i had that cost $125. so for $610 I had a nice 16 inch HBAR middy. then 6 months later they had a big sale and i was able to get a 20inch HBAR rifle for $395 + 20 shipping and my lower that i got for $100 for a total of $515. that was last year. their kit prices now start at $465.

If you are looking for a nice shooting rifle, these are the way to go for your first one. I shoot nice groups with mine and have had zero issues. I have shot around 1500 rounds between both rifles.

thanks everyone, i have been looking at the del-ton site already. I saw a video on youtube about a guy talking about his ar that he built. thats actually where i heard of this site and del-ton. The local gun shop has a del-ton in stock for $799-899 plus i wanted to get the .22 conversion just to shoot around cheaply. I would like to have the rifle for home defense and for just going out and having fun shooting with friends. i plan on joining the military when i graduate college around september or so. I still dont know exactly what rifle i want but you all are pointing me in a better direction. thanks again and any more advice on where to start looking is greatly appriciated. -Adam
