I assembled my first lower last night (extremely easy following the guides and posts on this site).  I ran into 1 problem though.  According to the guide here http://www.ar15.com/content/guides/assembly/lower/ and the other posts, the disconnector spring should have been tapered.

Bolt Catch Spring - easily confused with the disconnector spring; disconnector spring is tapered though.

Disconnector Spring - similar to bolt-catch spring, but identifiable because one end is wide than the other.

I did not have a tapered spring in my LPK (Spike's enhanced LPK), both springs were identical.  After assembly, all function checks were OK.  Could it be that there is something different with the Spike's LPK and it doesn't require a tapered spring for the disconnector?

While you may in fact didn't get one in your LPK, the taper on the disconnector spring is ever so slight. If you hold both
springs side by side you will notice the difference.

The disconnector  spring should be green in a ST LPK.

@wagonwheel1

I held them side by side, end to end, even had my wife check them out and they were identical to each other.  There were actually 3 of this spring in the kit, all identical.  Spike's seems to throw in a couple extra pins and springs in case you shoot them accross the room and lose them I guess.

@Jason121580

Definitely no green spring in the kit.  It was the "Enhanced Lower Parts Kit" though, not sure if it has the same springs as the standard Spike's LPK or not.

So I guess the question is, am I safe to use the rifle the way it is now?  I would guess once it is intalled and passes function checks, the tension from the spring itself will hold it in place and keep it from popping out and causing problems.  I could certainly be wrong though...

Call Spikes for a replacement.

I figured that would be the case.  I even thought about stopping the build when I didn't have a tapered spring, but I was just so excited to put it all together.  Oh well, at least I got the KNS pins with the enhanced kit.  They sould be pretty easy to remove so I don't have to worry about pounding out regular pins and marking up the receiver to take the trigger assembly back out...

Thanks for the input all.

Got my replacement spring in the mail from Spike's today.  The disco spring is green and the taper is easily visible.

Now, to replace the one I installed originally...  Is it possible to remove just the trigger pin and leave the hammer pin in place to swap out the spring?  I'm thinking I can use a punch to hold one side of the trigger in place well eoungh while I lift the disconnector out and swap the spring.

The hammer spring sits on top. Pulling the trigger pin out first will push the hammer springs down. It would be mighty difficult to lift it
all back up under tension. Just pull everything back out, may also have to remove the selector switch also, it's awful tight in there.

Hey, just remember if you had fun doing it the first time it will be just as much fun the second time around.

Yep, it sounded good in my head until I looked at my lower and realized just that.  Totally forgor about the hammer spring being on top.

Maybe doing this will hold off my desire to build another lower for a while...but then again, probably not

You will soon be ably to do it blindfolded. The first one is always a little tough because you usually send a couple spring/pins zinging across the room. Crawling on your knee's with a light looking into the carpet. The second one becomes real easy. Good luck you did good.

Frist lower I built I took apart and re did it twice just to make sure i was doing it right and watching the brownells video after the second build I could do it in a half hour....... I still like to take them apart just to see if i made any mistakes... If you can post the springs side by side mabey our sharp eyes can tell you if indeed you have it or mabey you installed it in the wrong place..

Can't do pics, I already swapped it out for the correct spring.  The kit definitely had an extra bolt catch spring and no disco spring when it arrived though.  Like Jason said above, the Spike's disco spring is green so it stands out from the bolt catch spring.  I didn't know that originally and compared the springs I had every which way possible trying to see a taper on either one of them.  The replacement Spike's sent was green and you could easily see the taper.  It's in the lower and functioning flawlessly now .
