So I finally have room for a workbench. I need a vice to do barrel swaps and such. So recommend me a good vice.

Bought one vust to see if it worked.  It does.
Mounted it on a 20MM can and I've had no issues

I use the previous model of this: http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Model-Width-4-Inch-Throat/dp/B00004XPVM. If you're going to be using a receiver vise block, make sure whatever you get has sufficient throat depth. My clamp on vise did not.

IME stay FAR away from the Harbor Freight ones.  I have several broken ones laying around here somewhere.

Buy bigger/stronger than you think you'll ever need.  Some day your buddy will want to beat his damn Chebby truck bearings out in your vise.  And mount it WELL to a SOLID bench.

I got a 6" Irwin from my local HD and I am very happy. Make sure the mouth opens up wide enough too, I use the upper rec blocks from Spikes and they are 5+" wide so a small vise won't work. Also a large one leaves room for brass, leather or rubber pads.

I also don't have a bench so I mounted mine to a 2x8 and added some 2x3 legs to keep it stable, works well and hangs on the wall, it's great when a bench is out of the question but you still want to use a vise, have yet to run into an issue.

The big blue wilton at lowe's works well (sortof like one of the above).

If you want a really nice one though, look for a higher-end wilton.

My favorite for rifle sized work is the 6.5" tradesman.

Ofcourse I don't make money with my tools anymore so I currently have the lowe's model. I feel that you need to be a little more careful about unevenly loading the jaws and overtorquing these lower end models, but they are plenty rugged for home use and will take a pretty good beating.

I have the old lady garage sale for my stuff.
You can get a good Wilton or Columbia for $5 or $10 and theyre far superior to anything out there under several hundred $$$.

This is a great vice that doesn't break the bank either. Grizzly makes good products at great prices. I use it with a DPMS claw and it works very well.

This looks almost exactly like the grizzle only its a 3" and about 1/2 the price price.

Is this GTG for light rifle work?

Kurt, they make some super fine vices.  Cant remember the price though, we use them at the University I go to.
