How much length does the A2 flash hider add to a barrel?  Anyone able to measure for me?  Thanks.

Note that overall length of the flash hider isn't what to use if you're worried about SBR issues as the FH OAL is reduced by the amount it threads onto the barrel.

IIRC the rule of thumb is an A2 a little less than 1.5", meaning you need to get one of those "extended" A2s to put on a 14.5" bbl.

This does help, thank you.

I am filling out my form 1 for an SBR and it asks for overall length (not including muzzle device).  Based on the photo and assuming the threads on the barrel are a standard 0.50-0.60" in length I would subtract approx. 1.2" off the stated OAL of the 16" rifle as advertised by KAC and then subtract 8".  It's almost a trick question because the only way to truly know the actual OAL is to assemble the upper and lower but that would be a violation of the law until the tax stamp is issued.  KAC lower with Noveske 8" 300 BLK upper.  Thanks again.

You got my curiosity up, so I measure some.  Non has  the same LOA, avg. was  1.755"  thread depth was .700"

no.
remove a2 fh, install bolt carrier into upper, insert rod down bore till it hit bolt face. mark rod, remove rod, measure rod.
eta your installing a 8" noveske 300 barrel. Bet your measurement will be 8"

Wait...  So... You're saying, an 8-inch barrel should be 8 inches long?

I agree this is the best and proper way to measure actual barrel length but it is illegal for me to assemble the 8" upper on a non registered lower.

OAL/Over All Length is what I am trying to calculate.  I trust that the Noveske barrel is 8".  BATFE Form 1 asks for the OAL with stock extended but not including the muzzle device.  KAC lists their SR-15 IWS 16" Carbine extended length as 36.25".  I will be using one of their SR-15 IWS lowers for this SBR.  My thought is that I take 36.25"-1.2"-8"=27.05"

That measurement is not critical at all.  People submit varying formulas of that all the time.  Stock extended, stock collapsed, etc.  As long as your measurement is within reason, it's not a big deal at all.

I've estimated mine every time.  It's funny... because you'd almost have to build the gun to measure it.... but you can't do that until you're approved.

Ahh I got it.  Well you could could index of the front or rear pin on the upper or lower and be easily be within .010, maybe closer depending on what your using to measure.

Once it's registered SBR, the OAL doesn't matter (it no longer has to be 26" or longer.)  Just subtract 8" from the advertised length, close enough.

Many barrels are NOT actually the length they are advertised as, I've had 16's that were 16.1, 16.2, 16.6, you get the idea.
