What's the proper rail length for an 18" SPR?
12" with the gas block exposed or 13.2" and covered up?

Depends on what you want. On my 18" build I went with a 12.5" YHM Diamond rail. I wanted the DD 14.0 but its over $300- way overpriced due to the laser etching.

I went with a Troy MRF RX 13.8" rail on my 18" SPRish build.

It's a Noveske intermediate gas length...

I too used the Troy MRF RX 13.8" on my 18" SPR type build. It covers a rifle length gas system.

There is a very big difference between YHM and DD rails, the least of which is the laser etching. I agree they are way pricey but comparing YHM and DD is like comparing Apples to rocks.
