I have finally decided to construct my own AR.  I currently have a 14.5 DPMS, FF rail, eotech etc; but I want something new. So why not build it and completely customize it?  I'm relatively new to the build scene so I was hoping some of you guys could point me in the right direction. Here's what I want :

16-18" barrel
gas piston
FF full length rail (thinking daniel defense for this)

My biggest questions are on deciding what uppers/lowers to use.  I've been reading up a lot on different ones but wanted to see what ya'lls thoughts were.  I don't want to take any shortcuts here either. I don't necessarily care about price, quality and performance are my two biggest issues.

Howdy,
As for lower recievers ive seen people on this forum just say "pick your roll mark and go".  There are severl manufacturers of lowers that people go with.  Mega, Spikes, Aero Percision, Palmetto State Armory, RRA, Stag.......... and its just goes on.  Make sure you have a quality company and you should be fine.  As far as uppers go its pretty much the same bag.  Just pick your poision from a reputable maker and youll be fine.  I personlly just got a Mega lower and the finish is AWESOME but ive heard great things about spikes and other lower.  Have fun building

if you want quality and performance stick with D I.,IMO. the ar's bcg was not designed for a piston set up. nor was it ever needed.

a good mega lower or similar, with any keyhole upper is all you need there. then get a quality BCG with a good barrel.

Anyone know anything about the FailZero bcg's or uppers?  The EXO stuff is pretty attractive

The FZ BCG are ideal for those looking for easy cleaning, and if one has concerns of running BCG too dry.  But that is easily overcome by a little CLP.  Quality yes, but you can not go wrong with a BCM or DD either when it comes to quality.

I just completed, minus the scope, my 18" AR15. I went with the rifle length gas piston set up and a Mega Machine Shop billet upper and lower. I couldn't be happier with the way it has turned out so-far. IMO the gas piston is the way to go simply due to the fact that the BCG stays clean, cool, and lubed longer. I also have a 16" DI and the difference between the two is very noticeable. However, I also believe that a guy should build what he wants in a rifle and nothing less. I will caution you about the gas piston system as there aren't as many options as far as handguard / rail / ff tube.

so when buying the BCG, does it matter really if you buy an auto or semi auto?  At the moment I can't purchase class 3 weapons (in the process of changing that)
