My brother has just built his first XM177 copy and just recieved his barrel that he had the flash suppressor mod done to it. He's been waiting like forever. Over a year.
Anyways, he saying he torqued the barrel at 30 and had to crank just a little further for the gas tube to line up. His bolt and barrel are all brand new (BM superlight barrel, I don't know where he got the bolt). He has a fostner go and no go gauge. He removed the ejector and it's actually closing on the no go gauge. How could the headspace be too long on a brand new barrel and bolt? I said the only thing I can think of is the gauges are meant for the ejector to actually be in. Are there different kinds of gauges? Some that need you to keep it in, and some that need you to keep it out? Or do we have it all messed up and it's the extractor that makes the difference. His extractor was off though I believe. Can we get some help? Are there diagrams on here? |

Yeah, I should've looked first. He's got saami gauges. But still, seems like it would be kind of long if it's closing on a saami no go. Does that mean he shouldn't fire .223 ammunition if it eventualy does close on a military or colt field gauge? Only 5.56?
He's got a couple of other AR's I told him he should try those bolts also. |

That is above my pay grade to give advice on that. someone else will have to help here. |

Get the proper gage and check it. With a Nato chamber the bolt can close on a commercial no go gage easily. ^ this, get a field gauge that is marked 5.56. There is a guy on here that sells surplus field gauges for around $30(can't remember his website) and brownells also sells the correct gauge. there was a member on here quite a while ago that bought a set of .223 gauges not knowing they were different and the bolt on every one of his rifles closed on the no go gauge. He posted it on here and after told to get an actual 5.56 gauge he rechecked them and all were fine. |
