Hi All,

First post here, been reading the forums and they are extremely helpful and informative. I currently have a S&W M&P 15x that I just got done putting a YMH spectre length diamond free float one, YHM 5C2 flash hider, YHM lo-pro gas block, Magpul CTR stock, and troy flip up front sight on. Really like it, and it shoots great. I recently this last weekend picked up a Mega lower from the gun show for $100 (couldn't pass it up) and want to build a target ar now. My questions were as follows:

1. What length barrel would you guys recommend? 18" or 20"? Don't really want to go any longer then that. I was thinking a 1:7 or 1:8. Suggestions on barrels would be great, bull barrel or non? My input was that I kinda wanted something fluted and threaded on the end.

2. Lower parts kits. I was going to get a Stag or CTM one as I heard the triggers on the DPMS's are less then desirable. Not set here yet as I might piece it together and get a jp trigger.

I just ordered a Dillon RL550b so I'm going to be pressing a lot of ammo and wanted something that I could shoot out to 200, 300 yards consistently. Thanks for all your input!

I recomend you go to theMolon Reference Links and read his essentials of a precision rifle thread. Or just read all his threads and copy one of his rifles! One of the resident accuracy Gurus and a technical wizard.

Seriously, the best barrel you can afford(free floated), A2 stock, best scope you can afford, and the best trigger you can afford is where to start, then spend money on match ammo and fine tuning your rifle to suit your shooting style as far as stock and grip preference, scope mount and height, bipod, etc. It's like picking a woman, some required traits, the rest is personal taste. There's a wide range of options out there, without knowing your budget range, it's hard to make specific recccomendations.

Just get yourself a RRA Predator Pursuit upper from PK Firearms...Mine shoots awesome.

Well I think I'd like to spend about $1k on the rest of the build not including scope to give you an idea of my price range. I looked at the RRA predator pursuit but I dont like the exposed railed gas block. I want to have a lo-pro gas block covered up by a longer foregrip. What do you guys recommend for length of barrel, 18 or 20?

damn, the Noveske wasnt available when I was shopping. I ended up doing something very similar with a MUR-1 and Krieger barrel on a Noveske lower. OP, Check out MSTN if you arent wanting to build.

I would go with a 20". I went with a 22" because I couldnt make up my mind between 20" and 24". Looking back, the 20 was the way to go, you just dont get much velocity out of a few more inches.

You should be able to get just about any top tier barrel, upper, ff tube, BCG, and other misc parts for right about a grand if you shop around.

I need help real quick!

I'm ordering some parts for my lower right now, I ordered a magpul prs stock and aim surplus SS lower parts kit. My question is this, I know the PRS requires a rifle length buffer tube so what all do I need?

I've got the rifle length buffer tube in my cart, rifle length spring, and rifle length buffer, do I need a castle nut and receiver end plate? I'm ordering these from Bravo Company and in the descriptions for both the castle nut and receiver end plate it says for "adjustable stock". Since mine is not do I need those two pieces?

[#7]
No, you do not need either with the PRS. From Bravo Company's site:

This stock will need a A1/A2 Rifle receiver extention (buffer tube), a A1/A2 Rifle Buffer, and a A1/A2 Rifle Buffer Spring to mount to your stripped receiver. (these items are not included)

Welcome to the site by the way

Well my plans have changed a little and I think I'm going to get a Mega Billet upper/lower combo or billet lower and a Mega monolithic upper. So I dont want to order a complete upper from anybody at the moment. I'm still on this whole barrel thing.... Does anyone have anything to say about the Sabre Defense barrels? Any good?

I kinda liked the looks of this one:

Or maybe this one (even though it's a 24"):

Are these worth the money? Skip it and get something better? Thanks for your opinions!

Have you had any problems with the width of your YHM Diamond forearms? I'm in the market for those or the Spikes Tacticle 12" BAR, and I've heard a few complaints about the width of thee YHM's.

No, I haven't it's definitely a little wider then the drop in troy I had on there but it doesn't bother me. Pretty nice build quality for what it costs ya. No real complaints!

I went through this same line of thinking a few years back; I wanted a plain and simple varmint rifle.

dpms lower
yhm a3 upper
dpms mark 12 18" blackened ss 1:8 with rifle length gas port
lowpro gb and rifle length gas tube
yhm phantom fh
daniel defense m16 bcg
dpms lpk with timney 3lb trigger
model 1 sales rifle length ff tube with K&S sling stud to mount bipod on
g27 pistol grip
A2 stock

total cost of parts plus S&H was just a tad over $1k iirc.

mounted a 9" bipod and a 4x18x40 S&W jap made scope I had laying around in a rra 1" one piece scope mount with the thoughts of putting a better scope on later but so far it works well for what I use it for, I also mounted a choat 1/2" cheek rest to the A2 stock as the rra mount is a tad high for a good cheek weld (plan on replacing the A2 with a magpul adjustable stock later), I've shot it out to 200yards with a load consisting of nosler 69gr custom comp, over AA data 68 powder (no longer available), cci 400 primer in imi brass, with this load it'll do it's part if I do mine.

ETA: I also installed a tubbs 4oz carrier weight system and wolff extra power buffer spring

Yeah I dont think i'm gonna get out from this without at least $1.5k the way I figure it...

Mega Billet Matched Upper and lower..... $420ish
Magpul PRS .... $200
Barrel possibly a sabre defense although no one really gave me any feed back on them..... $340

So that puts me at about a grand with no other parts or scope. Any word on the Sabre Defense barrels?

sabre barrels are very good.  have used 6 of them in my builds.  they are very well made and accurate.

Cool good to hear, now to decide between a Mega billet billet lower with Mega monolithic single railed upper or get a billet upper/lower set and a troy trx or other free float hand guard... cant decide....

Ended up going with the Sabre 20" fluted SS barrel

Hope I'm happy with it!

Don't rule out the White Oak barrels, and the Mega stuff is top of the line.

On barrel length, the 18" gives you a little more compact of a build without sacrificing much in the way of velocity and you can get the 18" with a rifle length gas system. Between 18" and 20" I would get which ever i could get the best deal on, which is what I did, but if both were the same price i would get the 18".
